How to Check if a USDT Address Is Blacklisted

Checking whether a USDT address is blacklisted is free, instant and needs no account. The blacklist is part of the USDT program itself, and that program will answer a direct question from anyone: paste an address, get back true or false. The whole thing takes about thirty seconds on a block explorer - the public search engine for a blockchain.

First, name the chain

USDT runs as a separate program on each chain, and each keeps its own list, so you must check the one your payment is actually travelling on. On Ethereum the official USDT contract is 0xdAC17F958D2ee523a2206206994597C13D831ec7; on Tron it is TR7NHqjeKQxGTCi8q8ZY4pL8otSzgjLj6t. Copy those from Tether's own site rather than from a search result, because fake tokens using the USDT name and logo are common.

The check, step by step

On Ethereum, open that contract on Etherscan, choose Contract, then Read Contract. Find the function named isBlackListed - Tether spells it with a capital L - paste the address you want to check into the box and press Query. It returns true if the address is blocked and false if it is not. On Tron the process is identical on Tronscan: open the contract, go to Read Contract, find isBlackListed, paste, query. Nothing you do here costs a fee or touches your own wallet, because you are only reading.

What a clear answer does not prove

It is a snapshot, not a guarantee. An address that reads false this morning can be flagged this afternoon, and roughly ten new addresses are added on a typical day. A clear result on one chain says nothing about the other. It also only covers the issuer's own list - it will not tell you that an exchange has frozen the account behind that address, or that the funds are stolen. Circle keeps an equivalent list for USDC with its own lookup on the USDC contract.

Make the check a habit at the moments it pays for itself: before accepting a large payment, and before sending one to an address a stranger gave you. What the USDT blacklist means explains the list behind the answer, and what a block explorer is covers the tool itself if this was your first visit to one.
