Trezor vs Ledger: Security, Recovery, Coins and Price Compared

Trezor vs Ledger comes down to four questions: how each device guards your keys, how you get back in if it breaks, which coins it handles, and what it costs. Both are hardware wallets - small devices that keep your private keys offline and sign payments without ever handing the keys to your computer. Both are safe enough that the device itself is almost never what fails.

Is one of them more secure?

Both now use a secure element: a tamper-resistant chip of the kind inside a passport or a bank card. The real difference is how much you can check for yourself. Trezor's firmware is fully open, so anyone can read the code and confirm that the version on their device matches it. Ledger publishes its apps but not all of the operating system running on the chip, so part of it cannot be inspected from outside. Neither has had a device flaw that drained ordinary owners. Ledger did lose a customer database in 2020, which is why Ledger owners still get convincing phishing emails and the occasional fake "replacement device" in the post.

What happens if the device breaks?

Both hand you a list of recovery words at setup, and those words - not the plastic - are your crypto. Lose the device, buy another, type the words in, and your coins reappear. Trezor's Safe models add Multi-share Backup: instead of one list, you get several shares and need, say, three of five to restore, so a single sheet of paper found in a drawer is useless to a thief. Ledger offers an optional paid subscription that stores encrypted pieces of your phrase with three separate companies. Both are extras; the plain paper backup works either way.

Coins and price

Ledger advertises 15,000+ coins and tokens through its Ledger Live app. Trezor supports thousands and is strongest on the big ones - Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, XRP - with smaller chains sometimes needing a third-party wallet. On price, in October 2026:

  • Trezor Safe 3 - about $59, buttons, no touchscreen
  • Trezor Safe 5 - about $129, colour touchscreen
  • Trezor Safe 7 - about $249, bigger screen, Bluetooth
  • Ledger Nano S Plus - about $79, buttons, USB only
  • Ledger Nano Gen5 - about $179, touchscreen
  • Ledger Flex - about $249; Ledger Stax - about $399

Whichever you pick, buy it from the manufacturer's own shop rather than a marketplace, set it up yourself so the device generates the words, and write them on paper by hand. Next: which of the two is safer, and Ledger vs MetaMask.
