Ledger vs Trezor 2026: Which Hardware Wallet Is Safer?

Ledger and Trezor are both safe enough that the device is almost never what fails. In the overwhelming majority of real losses, the recovery phrase was exposed - typed into a fake website, photographed, stored in a notes app. If you want the short answer on which hardware wallet is safer: Trezor is easier to verify, because its code is fully open, and Ledger has the wider ecosystem and more supported coins. Neither has had a device flaw that drained ordinary owners' funds.

What is inside each device?

Both now use a secure element - a tamper-resistant chip of the sort in a passport or a bank card, built so the secret inside is hard to read even by someone holding the device. The current Trezor Safe models (3, 5 and 7) and most current Ledgers (Nano S Plus, Flex, Stax) carry chips certified to EAL6+; the older Ledger Nano X uses an EAL5+ chip. The Safe 7 adds a second chip alongside it. On hardware, the two brands have essentially converged.

Why do people argue about open source?

Trezor's firmware is fully open with reproducible builds, meaning anyone can read the code and check that what is running on their device matches it. Ledger publishes its apps but not all of its secure element operating system, so part of what runs on the device cannot be inspected from outside. That argument got loud in 2023, when Ledger announced Recover, an optional paid service that splits a recovery phrase into three encrypted pieces held by three separate companies. Using it is a choice, but its existence showed the firmware can move the phrase off the device - something many owners had assumed was impossible by design.

What has actually gone wrong?

Ledger's customer database was breached in 2020, exposing around a million email addresses and 272,000 names, addresses and phone numbers. No coins were taken, but those owners still receive convincing phishing emails and occasional fake "replacement device" parcels. On the Trezor side, researchers extracted seeds from the old Model One and Model T, which had no secure element, using physical access and lab equipment; a strong passphrase defeated that, and the current Safe models are not affected.

Whichever you choose, buy it directly from the manufacturer rather than a marketplace, set it up yourself so you generate the phrase, and write those words on paper by hand. Never type them into anything, ever, including a page that looks exactly like your wallet. Start with what a hardware wallet is and how one protects your crypto.
