Bitcoin Tops $85,000 for the First Time Since Late January

Bitcoin Tops $85,000 for the First Time Since Late January

Bitcoin pushed above $85,000 on Monday, 21 September, a level it had not traded at since the last days of January. The Bitcoin Conference marked the move in an Instagram post captioned "Bitcoin surges to $85,000" and reminded followers that the last time the price stood there was late January 2026. Two market desks confirmed the break within hours. CryptoSlate put the intraday high at $85,193, and The Block reported a brief trade above $85,000 in its morning markets piece.

The rally came with a squeeze. Traders who had bet on a fall were forced out of their positions, and their buying pushed the price further.

What the post showed

The post ran across three slides. The first carried the round number, $85,000, over a space-themed illustration. The second was a candlestick chart of Bitcoin against the dollar, with a marker at 85,008 stamped 03:30:17 and a daily change of +3,858, or +4.75%. The chart's price axis ran from 80,000 at the bottom to 86,000 at the top. The post does not give a time zone for the stamp.

Those numbers hold together on their own terms. Subtract 3,858 from 85,008 and the reference price is about 81,150, and 4.75% is the gain from there. They do not match the other snapshots of the day, though. The Block's live ticker showed $84,324.40 and +4.17% when its story ran at 6:56 a.m. New York time, while its text said Bitcoin had gained more than 5% in 24 hours. CryptoSlate, at 11:10 UTC, had $84,545 and +5.20%. The figures were taken at different moments and do not reconcile.

Shorts paid for the move

Liquidation data from CoinGlass, cited by both The Block and CryptoSlate, showed more than $750 million in leveraged positions closed over 24 hours. Short positions made up $648 million of that. CryptoSlate put the total at $750.5 million across 137,386 traders, with Bitcoin accounting for about $360 million. The largest single liquidation was an $11.3 million BTC-USDT order on Binance, a figure both outlets carried.

CryptoSlate also cited CryptoQuant data showing net taker volume on Binance jumping from $11 million to $618 million within one hour around the European open. Net taker volume is the gap between aggressive buy and sell orders. The move extends a September climb that included a rally after the CPI release and a return above $80,000 on 18 September.

CryptoSlate tied the move to Bitcoin's weekly close above its 50-week moving average, the first since November 2025, and quoted Galaxy Digital's Alex Thorn on what that has meant before.

"previous recoveries of the measure have often provided strong confirmation that Bitcoin had already established its bear-market low," Alex Thorn of Galaxy Digital said, as quoted by CryptoSlate.

Where January comes in

The author's late-January claim checks out. CoinDesk reported on 29 January that Bitcoin had fallen to a 2026 low of $85,200 that day, and Bloomberg the same day described a slide below $85,000 that set off about $1 billion in liquidations. By 31 January Bloomberg had the price under $80,000. Monday's trade is the first return to that zone since.

The year is still in the red. The Block said Bitcoin was down less than 3% for 2026 and about 32.5% below its October all-time high near $126,000. A technical note published by Cryptonomist that morning put daily resistance at about $86,583 and the daily RSI, a momentum gauge, at 71.58, above the 70 line traders read as overbought. Those levels come from one analyst's model. The same weeks also brought a $433 million Friday for spot Bitcoin ETFs.

The conference behind the post

The third slide was a follow prompt for The Bitcoin Conference's Instagram account, showing 3,281 posts, 286K followers and 487 accounts followed at the time of the screenshot. We could not confirm those counts independently by publication time. The slide also listed upcoming events: Amsterdam on 5 and 6 November, Nashville in July 2027, Hong Kong in August 2027 and a MENA edition in late 2027. Event listings confirm a Bitcoin Amsterdam in November. The exact days rest on the organizer's slide.

The open question is whether $85,000 holds once the forced buying stops. With short liquidations doing much of the lifting, the next sessions will show how much of the move was demand.
