Morgan Stanley Says It Tokenized Equities on DTCC's New Service

Morgan Stanley Says It Tokenized Equities on DTCC's New Service

Morgan Stanley has said it is putting US stocks and Treasurys into token form, and said almost nothing else. The bank posted on its own X account that it is "among the first banks to tokenize real-world assets" following the launch of the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation's Tokenization Service. DailyCoin reproduced the post with a timestamp of 9:15 pm in New York on 3 November, which falls on 4 November in UTC. Unchained counted six days between the service going live and the bank saying it had used it. No securities were named in the post, no amounts and no network.

What DTC is actually issuing

The service went live on 28 October, run by the Depository Trust Company, DTCC's depository arm. DTCC calls the tokens digital twins: each is backed one-for-one by a security the depository already holds in custody, keeps the underlying CUSIP identifier, and carries the holder's existing rights, with DTC still the official record keeper. Eligible participants convert a position between book-entry and token form in either direction. Unchained reports that a no-action letter issued by the Securities and Exchange Commission in December 2025 covers Russell 1000 stocks, exchange-traded funds tracking major indices, and Treasury bills, notes and bonds. DailyCoin describes the same scope and adds that the letter sits inside a three-year framework. Two networks carry the tokens for now, the Canton Network and a private Hyperledger Besu network operated by DTCC. The SEC put tokenization on its 2027 examination priorities while leaving crypto off that list entirely.

Twenty signatures, or more than twenty

The count of launch participants comes back two ways. The Block and Unchained each report 20 DTC participants signed agreements to use the service at launch. DailyCoin writes that more than 20 firms have signed on. The two counts do not reconcile. The names overlap cleanly across the three accounts: Bank of America, Barclays, BNP Paribas, Citi, Fidelity Investments, JPMorgan, State Street and UBS, with further users onboarded on a rolling basis. Unchained makes the sharper point about what a signature is worth. DTCC's launch release named no participant as having tokenized anything, so this week's post moves Morgan Stanley from a signed client to a stated user, and no further than that.

"The hands-on experience of integrating tokenized securities with established market infrastructure will inform the continued development of the firm's digital asset capabilities as the market evolves," said Amy Oldenburg, Morgan Stanley's head of digital assets strategy.

The numbers sit around the edges

None of the figures in circulation measure what the bank actually did. DTC holds $114 trillion in assets under custody, which The Block and DailyCoin both carry. DailyCoin, crediting DTCC, says approximately $30 trillion in eligible securities may be covered by the initial rollout, and puts the whole tokenized real-world asset market at $39.4 billion with Treasuries above $14.2 billion, crediting RWA.xyz. Both of those rest on that one account. Set against a custody book of the stated size, the live tokenized market is a rounding error, and Morgan Stanley's contribution to it is not public. JPMorgan took its MONY and JLTXX tokenized funds live on Solana in October, on separate rails.

A date that already moved once

The bank's other tokenization timetable has slipped. The Block reports that Morgan Stanley expects to support tokenized equities on its alternative trading system in the first quarter of 2027, against an earlier target of the second half of 2026, and that Oldenburg said last month the infrastructure was still being built. Competitors are not waiting. The New York Stock Exchange and its parent, Intercontinental Exchange, are advancing a tokenized trading platform of their own, with Broadridge, Computershare, Equiniti and Superstate signed as transfer agents. What the post establishes is that the plumbing works for one bank on one day. Volume, clients and what comes next are all still unstated.
