Bitcoin Reclaims $80,000 and $130 Billion Returns to Crypto's Cap

Bitcoin traded back above $80,000 on Friday, 18 September, ending a week that had held it under $79,000. Ether ran with it and cleared $2,550. Two outlets put the daily gain near 6%: Benzinga had bitcoin at $80,905.50, up 5.97% over 24 hours, in a story filed at 11:01 a.m.; The Block, half an hour later, had $80,934.70 and 5.91%. The post carrying the move said $130 billion was added to the total crypto market capitalization in a day, and Benzinga printed the same figure. Prices had been down since the slide from $79,530 on Monday.

Where the price actually sat

The post's numbers come off a 30-minute Binance chart, not a daily one, and run lower. It showed bitcoin opening at $78,178.01, reaching $80,500.00, dipping to $78,146.04 and closing at $80,390.39, a gain of $2,212.38 or 2.83%. A later slide in the same post put bitcoin at $80,432.00 and up 4.9%. The Crypto Times, publishing at 2:40 p.m. UTC, had $80,822.42 and 5.5%, with a 24-hour range of $76,205.16 to $80,943.89. Those percentages do not reconcile, and neither do the lows. A half-hour candle is not a trading day. The charts themselves were scaled from $76,000.00 to $80,500.00 for bitcoin and $2,430.00 to $2,590.00 for ether.

Ether's line ran the same way. The post logged an open of $2,506.47, a high of $2,578.00, a low of $2,504.37 and a close of $2,570.45, up $63.95 or 2.55%, while its market table gave $2,561.92 and 3.8%. Benzinga had ether at $2,581.80 and up 5.58%, The Block at $2,587.88 and 5.73%. The Federal Reserve had raised rates 25 basis points on Wednesday, and bitcoin barely moved at the time.

The squeeze that did the work

Short sellers paid for the move. Over $170 million in shorts were liquidated inside 60 minutes, a claim the post made in its caption and Benzinga repeated on Friday morning, sourcing it to the trading account Bull Theory. No exchange tally covering that specific hour was published alongside it. Over a full day the numbers are larger and firmer. The Crypto Times counted $507.06 million in total liquidations, $449.71 million of them shorts against $57.35 million of longs, with bitcoin positions accounting for $237.77 million and ether $87.70 million across more than 104,000 accounts. Hourly and daily tallies measure different things and do not add together.

The post illustrated the point with one blown-up position, a short at 20x leverage carrying a loss of 172,842.16 USDT. That is a single trader's screen. It is not a market statistic.

"Bitcoin's up 32% this quarter and nobody's even paying attention," the trader Scott Melker said in comments carried by Benzinga on Friday.

Two slides pointing opposite ways

A third slide cuts against the rest of the post. It shows a screen of falling pairs over 24 hours: one line at -8.32%, SOL at -7.21%, DOGE at -6.95%, XRP at -6.57%, ADA at -6.24%, BNB at -5.78% and AVAX at -6.90%. The transcription logs that first line as ether in one place and Solana in another. None of those declines match Friday's tape. The same post's table has all of them higher, and so did every outlet checked. The slide reads as imagery from an earlier selloff. We could not date it.

What the wider board showed

The market table in the post gave five assets:

  • BTC at $80,432.00, up 4.9%, market cap $1.615 trillion
  • ETH at $2,561.92, up 3.8%, market cap $312.72 billion
  • USDT at $0.999370, unchanged at 0.0%, market cap $183.32 billion
  • BNB at $758.03, up 4.3%, market cap $100.92 billion
  • XRP at $1.37, up 4.9%, market cap $86.07 billion

Above the table it put the global market capitalization at $2.745 trillion, up 1.3% on the day, on $104.65 billion of 24-hour volume. Neither figure could be matched against a second source by publication time, so both stay attributed to the post. XRP is the clearest miss in the set. Benzinga had it at $1.40 and up 7.93%, The Crypto Times near $1.38 and up almost 7%, against the post's $1.37 and 4.9%.

After the squeeze

Forced buying is spent once the shorts are gone, which leaves the next leg to spot demand. Friday's high of $80,943.89 was also the seven-day high on The Crypto Times' reading, so the level has not been tested twice. Whether the $130 billion stays on the board through the weekend is the open question.
