Bitcoin Developer Luke Dashjr Loses Over 215 BTC in Hack Attack—What Happened?

Luke Dashjr, one of the main developers of the cryptocurrency Bitcoin, began 2023 on a somber note. His crypto wallet was hacked, resulting in the loss of 216.93 BTC from his personal holdings. With the current price of BTC at $16,570, Dashjr’s loss amounts to around $3.6 million in this cyberattack. Hackers exploited Dashjr’s Pretty Good Privacy (PGP) key, which allowed them to bypass two private keys and drain most of his funds.

“Please help,” Dashjr posted on Twitter, sharing details of the incident. Clearly disappointed, he later tweeted, “Essentially everything is gone.” He also shared the wallet address to which the stolen Bitcoin was allegedly transferred.

As of now, the exact details of how the hack was executed remain unclear. However, Dashjr’s followers on Twitter suspect that his post from November 17, where he mentioned that someone had accessed his server, may have exposed server vulnerabilities to hackers, who then used this to breach his wallet and transfer the funds.
