Why Solana Transactions Cost Money Even When They Fail

Solana transactions cost money even when they fail because the network still did the work. Validators received your instruction, checked it, ran it and wrote the outcome into a block - the outcome simply happened to be "this did not work". The fee pays for the effort, not for the result. The saving grace is the size of it: the base fee is 0.000005 SOL per signature, a fraction of a cent.

What you are actually paying for

It works like a taxi meter. The driver takes you across town to a shop that turns out to be closed, and you still pay for the journey, because the journey was real even though the errand failed. A validator cannot know your swap will fail until it has run it, and by then the work is done.

Two charges can show up. The base fee is fixed and tiny. The priority fee is the extra your wallet offered to be processed sooner while the network was busy, and it is taken as well, because it bought the place in the queue you asked for. During heavy congestion apps bid these up, which is why a run of failed attempts can add up to more than you expected.

Why a failure still keeps your tokens safe

A Solana transaction is all-or-nothing. If any step inside it cannot complete, the whole thing is rolled back and your balances stay exactly where they started. Nothing is left half-swapped and nothing is sent to a stranger. You pay the fee and you keep the coins.

When nothing is charged at all

There is one case with no fee. If the network was too busy and your request expired before a validator ever picked it up, it was dropped rather than failed - Phantom often shows this as pending and then simply gone - and nothing was deducted. Failed costs a fee; dropped costs nothing. The difference is whether it reached a block.

If fees from failures are adding up to something you notice, the cause is usually one setting rather than bad luck. Why a Solana transaction fails lists what to look for, and how to fix failed Solana transactions covers the changes worth making before you retry.
