What Is Cryptocurrency and How Does It Work? Explained Simply

Here is cryptocurrency explained simply: it is a scoreboard that everybody can see and nobody owns. Instead of a bank keeping a private list of who has what, thousands of computers keep the same public list, and they only agree to add a line when the maths checks out. That shared list is how crypto works, and everything else is detail.

Follow one payment

Say you send a friend some bitcoin. You open your wallet app, paste their address, type the amount and press send. Your wallet signs the instruction with a secret key stored on your phone - a bit like signing a cheque, except the signature cannot be forged or copied. The instruction goes out to the network. Computers check two things: that the signature matches your address, and that your address really has the coins. If both are true, the payment is added to the scoreboard and your friend sees it. No branch, no opening hours, no form.

Why would anyone trust a list with no owner?

Because cheating means rewriting thousands of copies at the same moment, and the system makes that absurdly expensive. On Bitcoin, computers burn real electricity to earn the right to add the next page of payments; on Ethereum, participants lock up coins they lose if they cheat. Either way, playing fair pays better than lying. That is the whole trick, and it is why a stranger will accept your payment without knowing your name.

So what is a wallet holding?

Only the key. The coins stay on the shared list; the key is what proves a line on that list belongs to you. MetaMask keeps the key in an app, a Ledger keeps it on a small device that never goes online. Lose the key and nobody can help you, because there is no company with a copy - which is exactly the same fact that means no company can freeze your account either.

The useful first step is small and dull: buy a little on a well-known exchange, send a test amount to your own wallet, and watch it arrive. Then read the fuller answer on how cryptocurrency works and what a blockchain actually is.
