What Is a Fiat On-Ramp? How to Turn Cash Into Crypto

A fiat on-ramp is any service that turns ordinary government money, such as dollars or euros, into crypto. Fiat is simply the industry word for the money in your bank account. The on-ramp is the doorway in: you pay with a card or a bank transfer at one end, and bitcoin, ether or a stablecoin arrives at the other. An off-ramp is the same door in reverse, turning crypto back into cash.

What are the main kinds?

  • Exchanges. Coinbase, Kraken and Binance let you deposit money and buy at the market price. Usually the cheapest route and the best starting point.
  • In-app providers. Services such as MoonPay appear inside wallets like MetaMask, so you can buy without leaving the app. Convenient, and noticeably more expensive.
  • Peer-to-peer marketplaces, where you pay another person directly and the platform holds the coins until both sides confirm.
  • Bitcoin ATMs, which are quick, public and typically carry the highest fees of all.

Why do they all ask for your passport?

Because an on-ramp is where crypto touches the banking system, and financial rules in most countries require the company to identify its customers. That check is called KYC, and it usually means a photo of your ID and a selfie. Doing it before you fund the account saves the unpleasant surprise of a blocked withdrawal later.

What does it cost?

More than the headline rate suggests. A card purchase is the expensive way in, often several percent once the card fee and the exchange rate markup are counted; a bank transfer on the same exchange can cost a fraction of that for the same coins. Compare the final amount of crypto you receive, not the advertised fee.

A sensible first run: use a well-known exchange, pay by bank transfer, buy a small amount, and move it to a wallet you control to see the whole path work. Our step-by-step buying guide walks through it. Never buy through a link someone messaged you, however official the site looks.
