How to Buy Your First Crypto: A Simple Step-by-Step Guide

Buying your first crypto takes about twenty minutes. You open an account at an established exchange, prove who you are, add money from your bank, buy a small amount of something well known such as bitcoin or ether, and then move it to a wallet you control. That is the whole process. Everything else is detail you can learn later.

Where should a beginner buy?

A large, regulated exchange operating in your own country β€” Coinbase, Kraken and Binance are the names most people start with. All of them must check your identity, so have a passport or driving licence and a recent bill ready. Approval usually takes minutes, sometimes a day. Skip any platform you found through an advert promising profits, and never buy from a stranger who messaged you first.

What should you buy first?

Something boring. Bitcoin and ether are the two largest and the easiest to sell again when you want your money back. Both move sharply, so start with an amount you would not miss rather than a meaningful sum β€” our guide to volatility explains how sharply. At the order screen you will see two choices: a market order buys instantly at whatever the price is right now, and a limit order waits for a price you name. For a first purchase, a market order is fine.

What happens after you buy?

The coins sit in the exchange's custody, which means the exchange holds the keys and you hold a promise. For a small amount that is a reasonable trade. Once you own more than you would happily lose, install a wallet such as MetaMask or buy a Ledger, and withdraw to it. Send a tiny test amount first, wait for it to arrive, then send the rest.

Three things worth doing in week one: turn on two-factor authentication with an authenticator app rather than SMS, write down which bank description the purchase shows up as so you recognise it later, and expect the first withdrawal to feel nerve-wracking β€” it stops feeling that way quickly. Buying a small amount every month, rather than one large amount on a day that felt exciting, is how most people avoid paying the worst price of the year.
