What Is a Limit Order in Crypto?

A limit order says: do this trade, but only at my price or better. You name a price and an amount, and the order waits until somebody is willing to meet it. Buy 0.01 bitcoin at 60,000 dollars and nothing happens while the market sits above that; the moment a seller comes down to your number, your order fills. You control the price. What you give up is the certainty that the trade happens at all.

Where does the order go while it waits?

Into the order book, where everyone can see it as one more line of demand or supply. That is why exchanges usually charge less for limit orders than for market orders: you are adding liquidity rather than taking it, so you get the cheaper of the two fee tiers. Your order can also fill in pieces. If you asked for one coin and only half a coin is available at your price, you get half now and the rest stays on the book until it is filled or you cancel it.

When is a limit order worth the wait?

Three situations, mostly. When the coin is thinly traded and a market order would drag you through a wide spread. When your order is large enough to move the price by itself. And when you genuinely do not mind missing the trade β€” a price you would be happy to buy at, left to sit, costs nothing while it waits.

What goes wrong with them?

The main failure is the order that never fills. Markets can run away from a price and not come back for months, so a buy order pinned far below the market is not a strategy, it is a wish. The opposite mistake is forgetting one: an old order left open can execute in the middle of a sudden move, long after you stopped wanting it. Some exchanges also freeze the funds behind an open order, so money you thought was free may not be.

Review your open orders on the same day you place them and cancel the ones you no longer mean. Two minutes of housekeeping prevents nearly every unpleasant surprise a limit order can produce.
