What Is KYC on Crypto Exchanges?

KYC stands for know your customer. It is the identity check a crypto exchange runs before letting you deposit money, trade or withdraw: you upload a photo of your passport or driving licence, take a selfie, and confirm your address. Coinbase, Kraken and Binance all do it, for the same reason a bank does it when you open an account. Financial rules in most countries require the company to know who its customers are.

What will they ask for?

Usually a government photo ID, a live selfie so the photo can be matched to a real face, your date of birth and home address, and sometimes proof of address such as a utility bill or bank statement. Larger accounts can also be asked where the money came from. Approval is often automatic within minutes; if a document is blurry or a name does not match, it goes to a human and can take days.

Why does it exist, and what does it cost you?

The point is to make it harder to move stolen or laundered money through an exchange. The cost to you is privacy: the exchange now holds a copy of your ID, and if it is ever breached, that copy is in the leak too. That is a real trade-off, not a scare story, and it is a good reason to use a strong unique password and an authenticator app rather than SMS codes on any account holding your documents.

What if you skip it?

Most reputable exchanges will not let you get far. Some allow small deposits unverified, then block withdrawals, which is the worst moment to discover the requirement. Verify before you fund the account, not after.

Two practical notes. Use the exact name on your ID when you register, because a bank transfer from an account in a different name is a common reason deposits get rejected. And never send documents to anyone who messages you first claiming to be support, however official the profile looks. Real verification happens inside the app or the site you logged into yourself. If you are just getting started, our guide on buying your first crypto walks through the rest, and exchange versus wallet covers where to keep it afterwards.
