What Is a Fiat Off-Ramp? How to Turn Crypto Back Into Cash

A fiat off-ramp is any service that turns crypto back into ordinary government money and puts it in your bank account. It is the same doorway as an on-ramp, walked in the other direction. The process is always two separate steps: first you sell the crypto for dollars or euros, then you withdraw that balance to a bank. Confusing the two is why people think a withdrawal has gone missing when it has not.
What are the main routes out?
- An exchange. Sell on Coinbase, Kraken or Binance and withdraw by bank transfer. Almost always the cheapest way, and the one with the clearest paper trail.
- A crypto debit card, which sells a little each time you spend. Convenient, and the exchange rate is rarely the best one available.
- Peer-to-peer marketplaces, where another person sends you money directly and the platform holds the coins until both sides confirm.
- Bitcoin ATMs, which hand over cash in minutes and charge the most of any option by a wide margin.
Why does the money take days to arrive?
The sale happens in seconds; the bank payout runs on banking hours. Many exchanges also hold the first withdrawal from a new account, or a withdrawal to a bank account you have just added, for a day or two as a fraud check. Costs stack up too: a trading fee to sell, then a fixed withdrawal fee, and a wider gap between buy and sell prices on smaller coins.
What makes a withdrawal go wrong?
Usually a mismatch. The bank account must be in the same name as the exchange account, your identity check must already be complete, and a sudden large cash-out from an account that has only ever received deposits tends to trigger a manual review. Keeping simple records of where the crypto came from turns that review into a short email rather than a long freeze. Selling may also create a tax bill in your country, so it is worth knowing the rule before you press the button, not after.
Do a small withdrawal first, all the way to your bank, before you ever need to move a large amount in a hurry. And treat any off-ramp that someone recommended in a message as a scam until proven otherwise. Our guides to fiat on-ramps and KYC cover the way in.
