River Estimates 825,000 People Own a Whole Bitcoin, or 1 in 10,000

River Estimates 825,000 People Own a Whole Bitcoin, or 1 in 10,000

A bitcoin financial services firm has put a number on the whole-coin club. River estimates that roughly 825,000 people worldwide own at least one entire bitcoin, against a world population near 8 billion. That is about one person in 10,000. In an analysis BeInCrypto carried on 26 August, the firm set that beside the roughly 57.5 million people it counts as dollar millionaires, where the odds run closer to one in 143. Owning a whole coin, on those numbers, is about 70 times rarer than owning a million dollars.

Addresses are not people

River worked backwards from the chain. About 972,000 addresses hold at least one bitcoin by its count, and that raw total sweeps in corporate treasuries, government stashes, exchange-traded funds and exchange wallets. Netting out that institutional concentration leaves the harder problem untouched, because one owner can sit behind several addresses and several owners can sit behind one. River's stated range for the headline figure runs from 600,000 to 1 million people. The gap is wide.

"The Bitcoin blockchain records addresses, not people, so no one can count bitcoin owners directly," the analysis said.

The starting number is itself disputed

River's 972,000 is not the only count in circulation. Cointelegraph, working from mid-2025 data, put the figure at 827,000 to 900,000 addresses and the number of individuals at 800,000 to 850,000, or 0.01% to 0.02% of the world. Wallet compilations published this year give 988,627. Measured against crypto owners instead of the whole world, the share stays small either way: Cointelegraph put it at about 0.18%, or fewer than two in every 1,000 people holding any crypto at all. Glassnode marked the whole-coin address count passing 1 million in May 2023, and IntoTheBlock counted 1,010,777 in June 2024. Those totals do not reconcile, and we could not establish which snapshot each tracker is reading. A tally that sat above a million two years ago and below it now is not a straight line.

Above the line, the air thins

The distribution above the whole-coin mark is steep, and the same on-chain data shows why. Cointelegraph read it as 1.86% of all bitcoin addresses controlling 90% of the supply, with four addresses in the 100,000 to 1 million BTC range holding 14% of every coin in existence between them. Those are addresses again, not owners.

River counts about 800 people holding between 1,000 and 10,000 BTC, odds it puts near one in 10 million. Address-level tallies for that same band run higher, with one 2026 compilation listing 2,100 addresses in it. People and addresses are not the same unit, and the two figures do not reconcile. What a block explorer shows is the balance, not the owner. Coverage of whale accumulation has run into that same wall all year, and this estimate does not clear it.

The count moves, the cap does not

Every figure here is a snapshot of a distribution that keeps shifting, and price shifts it. A dearer coin pushes marginal holders below the whole-coin line. A cheaper one lifts them back over. The 21 million supply limit does not move at all, and that is the part River leans on: the millionaire population can keep growing, while the whole-coin population is bounded by arithmetic. Whether River updates the estimate, and whether any other desk publishes its own address-to-owner adjustment, was unresolved at the time of writing. The write-up did not say when River's address snapshot was taken, and that is the detail another desk would need to reproduce the number.
