What Is a Bagholder in Crypto?

A bagholder is someone left holding a coin long after the crowd has gone. They bought near the top, the price fell, and they are still there β sometimes waiting for a recovery that never arrives. It is not an insult about size. You can be a bagholder with fifty dollars in a coin nobody talks about any more.
Where does the word bagholder come from?
From an old expression about being left holding the bag: the person still standing there when everyone else has quietly walked off, holding whatever is left over. Stock traders used it long before crypto existed, and crypto adopted it because the pattern repeats so fast here. A coin gets attention for a few weeks, early buyers sell into the excitement, and the last people in are the ones holding the bag.
How do people end up holding the bag?
Almost always the same way. They hear about a coin only after it has already risen a long way, buy because the chart looks like free money, and then discover that the story was the product. The SQUID token of November 2021 is the clean example: it climbed for days on the name of a popular TV show, then the people behind it drained the money out and the price went to nothing within minutes. A pump and dump produces bagholders on purpose β they are the exit.
Is every falling coin a bag?
No, and this is where the word gets used carelessly. People who bought bitcoin or ethereum at a high and waited have historically seen those prices again, so a red position is not automatically a bag. What separates the two is whether the thing still exists and still does something. Plenty of 2017 tokens are simply abandoned: no developers, no product, no updates for years. That is a bag. A widely used network in a bad stretch is not the same situation, however similar the chart looks.
The habit worth building is small: before buying anything, write down in one sentence what the project does and who uses it. If you cannot, you are not investing, you are hoping someone buys after you. And when a position is clearly finished, selling it is allowed β refusing to look at a loss is not the same as diamond hands.
