What Are Diamond Hands in Crypto?

Diamond hands means holding on through a big price fall without selling. It is a compliment, usually written with the diamond and hands emoji, and it describes the person who watched their coins drop 50% and did nothing at all. The opposite insult is paper hands: hands that let go the moment things get heavy.
Where does the phrase come from?
From the Reddit trading community WallStreetBets, which went mainstream during the GameStop episode of January 2021. Crypto picked the phrase up almost immediately, because it already had the behaviour: people who bought bitcoin and then sat through the 2018 fall, or the long slide through 2022, without touching it. A diamond is the hardest thing most people can name β the point of the image is that it does not crack under pressure.
Does holding through a crash actually work?
For a small number of assets, historically, it has. Bitcoin and ethereum have both fallen by 70% or more and later recovered, and the people who did nothing during those years did better than the people who traded in and out. But that is the survivors' story. Thousands of coins fell just as hard and simply never came back, and nobody writes posts about the ones they held all the way to zero. Refusing to sell is only impressive if the thing is worth owning; otherwise it is just a slow way to lose money with good posture.
When does it stop being a plan?
When it becomes an identity. "Diamond hands" is a phrase people use on each other, and it works as social pressure: nobody wants to be the one who sold. That is exactly what a failing project needs from its holders, and it is why the loudest calls for diamond hands often come from the coins with the least to show. Conviction should rest on what a thing does β bitcoin's fixed supply, ethereum's applications β not on how it feels to admit a mistake. The calm version of this idea, without the bravado, is HODL.
If you want to hold through the rough parts, make it easy on yourself: own an amount you can ignore, keep it in a wallet you control rather than on an exchange, and write down now β while nothing is happening β the one thing that would make you sell. Then let the chat call you whatever it likes.
