What Is a Pump and Dump in Crypto?

What Is a Pump and Dump in Crypto?

A pump and dump is a scam with two halves. First a group quietly buys a small, cheap coin. Then they talk it up loudly until strangers start buying β€” that is the pump. When enough new money arrives, they sell everything they own into that demand, the price collapses, and the newcomers are left holding it. That is the dump. It is illegal in stock markets and has been for a century; in crypto it happens most weeks.

How does the scheme actually work?

It works because the coins chosen are tiny. A coin barely anyone trades can be moved a long way by a small amount of money, the way a few people jumping can rock a small boat but not a ferry. The steps rarely change:

  • Insiders accumulate a coin almost nobody is watching, at almost no cost.
  • The hype starts β€” social posts, group chats, paid influencers, screenshots of the chart going up.
  • Outsiders buy, afraid of missing out, and the rise becomes its own advertisement.
  • The insiders sell into that buying. The price falls faster than it rose, and the chat goes silent.

What did the Squid Game token show?

In late 2021 a token borrowed the name of a popular TV show it had nothing to do with. Coverage spread, buyers piled in, and the price ran from cents to over $2,000 in days. Then the creators sold out and vanished with millions, and the price went to essentially nothing within minutes. The cruellest detail was in the code: buyers had been blocked from selling at all, so they could only watch. Nobody could reverse it, because nobody was in charge of it.

How do you spot one early?

The tells are consistent. A coin you had never heard of a week ago is suddenly everywhere. The pitch is about the price going up rather than about what the thing does. There is a deadline β€” "last chance before launch". Someone offers a guaranteed return, which nothing honest ever does. And the group chat treats questions as disloyalty.

The practical rule is unglamorous: if the only reason to buy something is that it is already rising, you are the exit, not the opportunity. Stick to things you could explain to a friend without mentioning the price, and treat any private group promising a coordinated "pump" as what it is β€” an invitation to be the one left holding it.
