Solana Explorer Guide: How to Use a Solana Blockchain Explorer

A blockchain explorer is a search engine for a blockchain. Solana records every transaction in public, but the raw record is unreadable, so an explorer reads it for you and lays it out as pages: one per transaction, one per wallet, one per token. You type in an address or a signature and it shows you the history. Nothing is private about this and nothing needs an account - it is a library catalogue for a library anyone can walk into.
Which Solana explorer should you use?
Solscan is the one most wallets and apps link to. It launched in 2021, was acquired by Etherscan - the team behind the Ethereum explorer - in early 2024, and it reads more clearly than the rest for ordinary lookups. Solana Explorer, at explorer.solana.com, is the official one, built by Solana Labs and now maintained by the Solana Foundation; it shows less decoration and more raw truth, which developers prefer. Solana Beach, running since 2020, is really a network dashboard: validators, stake distribution, epoch progress. SolanaFM was popular for a while but has been largely unmaintained since Jupiter acquired it in 2024, so do not rely on it.
What can you look up?
All of them accept the same four inputs. A transaction signature gives you one payment. A wallet address gives you a full history and current holdings. A token address gives you supply and the list of largest holders, which is the quickest sanity check on a new token nobody has heard of. A slot or block number gives you everything that happened in that fraction of a second. Because the data comes from the chain itself, two explorers will agree on the numbers even when they disagree on how to present them.
What can an explorer not tell you?
Who anyone is. Addresses are just addresses; the friendly names you see - an exchange, a known protocol - are labels the explorer added by hand, and they cover only the well-known accounts. An explorer also cannot tell you whether a token is worth anything. It is a record of what happened, not a judgement on it.
Pick one explorer and get used to its layout rather than hopping between them, and bookmark your own wallet page so you can check a balance without unlocking anything. Next: what Solscan is and how to read it and how to read a Solana transaction.
