Leveraged Bitcoin ETF Decay: Why 2x Funds Lose Ground

A leveraged bitcoin ETF promises twice bitcoin's move - but twice its move each day, not over the month or the year. Because the fund resets its exposure every single day, a choppy market grinds it down. Bitcoin can finish a stretch exactly where it began while a 2x fund such as Volatility Shares' BITX or ProShares' BITU ends it down. That grinding is called volatility decay, and it is arithmetic, not a fault.
The numbers that show it
Say bitcoin falls 10% one day, then rises 11.1% the next. It is back where it started. A perfect 2x fund falls 20% on day one, leaving $80 of every $100. On day two it gains 22.2% of that $80 - about $17.80 - finishing near $97.80. Bitcoin: flat. The fund: down more than 2%. Repeat that pattern for a few weeks and the shortfall is no longer small.
Why the daily reset does it
To keep the ratio at 2x, the fund must buy more exposure after bitcoin rises and sell some after it falls - every day, mechanically. It is buying high and selling low on purpose, which is the only way to keep the promise it made. In a straight run upwards that reset works in your favour and a 2x fund can beat twice bitcoin's gain. In anything sideways and violent, which describes bitcoin most of the time, it works against you. The two cases are the same machine.
What the fees add
These funds also cost more to run. BITU's expense ratio sits at 0.95% and BITX's higher still, and underneath that they hold futures contracts, so the monthly roll cost from the ordinary futures ETFs applies here too - doubled, since the exposure is doubled. Three separate drags, stacked.
What they are actually for
Leveraged funds are built for a view you hold for a day or two, which is why their own prospectuses say so in plain words. Used as a long-term way to "own more bitcoin", they are the wrong instrument, and the loss does not come from being wrong about direction - it comes from the reset.
If you want more exposure for the long run, more of a spot bitcoin ETF, or more coins, does it without the decay. If you do use a 2x fund, check it daily and know the date you intend to be out. The single-leverage version of the same roll problem is in contango and decay, and the structural drawbacks in problems with bitcoin futures ETFs.
