Problems With Bitcoin Futures ETFs: What to Know Before Buying

Bitcoin futures ETFs do exactly what their documents promise, and that is the problem - what they promise is not bitcoin. They hold expiring contracts rather than coins, which brings a recurring roll cost, a fee several times a spot fund's, a return that drifts below bitcoin's the longer you hold, and nothing you can ever move to a wallet.

The cost that is not on the fee line

Later-dated futures normally trade above nearer ones, so each monthly roll means selling cheap and buying dear. ProShares' BITO charges 0.95% a year on top of that, against roughly 0.20% to 0.25% at the large spot funds such as BlackRock's IBIT. The published fee is the part you can look up. The roll is the part you have to work out.

The problems in one list

  • Roll cost. Twelve forced trades a year, each slightly against you.
  • Higher fee. Roughly four times what a spot bitcoin ETF charges.
  • Tracking drift. Close to bitcoin over a week, visibly behind over a year.
  • Confusing charts. BITO pays monthly distributions, and each one comes straight off the share price, so a price chart overstates the gap.
  • No coins. You cannot withdraw bitcoin from a fund, spend it, or send it to MetaMask or a Ledger device.
  • Market hours. Bitcoin trades all night and all weekend; your shares do not.

Where they still make sense

In a retirement or brokerage account that will not let you buy a spot fund, or for a position you intend to hold for a fortnight, the roll cost barely registers and the convenience is real. The mismatch is between a monthly-rental structure and a multi-year holding - like leasing a car for a decade and wondering where the money went.

If you already own one, compare total return rather than share price over the past year, since that counts distributions back in and tells you what actually happened. Then decide deliberately whether you want the futures structure or the coins. The mechanics are in what a bitcoin futures ETF is, and the specific bill in BITO's expense ratio and roll cost.
