How to Reset the Nonce in MetaMask

You cannot really reset the nonce in MetaMask, and knowing why saves a lot of wasted evenings. The nonce - the counter on every transaction you send - is stored by the Ethereum network, not by your wallet. What you can reset is MetaMask's local copy of that counter, which is the thing that goes wrong. In the extension it is Settings, then Advanced, then "Clear activity tab data" - the option older guides call "Reset account".

What clearing it actually does

It throws away MetaMask's stored history for that address and asks the network for the true transaction count again. Your coins, your tokens and your secret recovery phrase are untouched, because none of them live in that history. Think of it as tearing up your own handwritten copy of a bank statement. The bank's records are the real ones, and they do not change.

What it does not do

It does not cancel anything. A transaction already sitting in the network's waiting room stays there, invisible to you now, and it can still confirm hours later. That surprises people: the wallet looks clean, so they send the payment again, and then both versions land. It also does nothing to tokens or balances - if a token vanished from view, this will not bring it back, and re-adding the token contract will.

When you actually need it

Three cases, and no others. Your transaction list shows something that Etherscan says confirmed long ago. You keep getting "nonce too low" after switching networks twice. Or you used the same address in a second wallet - Rabby, Frame, a hardware wallet through a different interface - and MetaMask's count drifted behind. If the real problem is a payment stuck pending, clearing history is the wrong tool entirely; you need to overwrite that nonce with a higher fee.

Before you clear anything, save the block explorer link for any pending transaction, because the wallet will forget it and you will want to check later whether it ever confirmed.
