Resetting Your Account in the Event of a Stuck or Pending Transaction

Resetting your account in the event of a stuck or pending transaction is a smaller move than it sounds. In MetaMask it clears the transaction list your wallet keeps on your own computer and nothing else. It never touches your funds, your tokens or your secret recovery phrase, and - this is the part people miss - it does not remove the pending transaction from the network. It only stops you seeing it.

Where the button is

MetaMask extension: Settings, Advanced, "Clear activity tab data", which earlier versions labelled "Reset account". Each address is cleared separately, so if two accounts are misbehaving you do it twice. It is a local action. A hardware wallet such as a Ledger is unaffected, because the device stores keys, not history.

What it fixes and what it will not

It fixes display problems: a transaction that shows as pending in the wallet but confirmed on Etherscan, a count that drifted after you used the same address in another wallet, a "nonce too low" error that survives a restart. It does not fix a real stuck payment. Picture a letter already in the postbox - burning your copy of the address does not bring the letter back. The transaction is in the network's waiting room, and only a replacement paying a higher fee removes it.

Do this first

Open your address on Etherscan and check whether the transaction is genuinely pending or already confirmed. If Etherscan shows it still waiting, use Speed Up or Cancel in the wallet, or send a replacement with the same nonce and a fee twenty to thirty percent higher. Only when the chain and your wallet disagree is a reset the right answer - and copy the transaction hash somewhere safe before you clear, because afterwards the wallet cannot tell you what it was.

One habit prevents most of this: check the explorer before you press anything. The chain is the record; your wallet is a window onto it, and windows get dirty. If something really is stuck, start with why it is pending, then use Speed Up or Cancel.
