The Bitcoin-on-Mars Paper Behind a Viral Post Dates to August 2025

A post circulating this week tells readers that scientists want Bitcoin to become the first money that works across planets. The paper it points to is real. "Bitcoin as an Interplanetary Monetary Standard with Proof-of-Transit Timestamping" went up on arXiv on 28 August 2025, written by Jose E. Puente and Carlos Puente and filed under cryptography and security. What the post gets wrong is the timing. TheStreet wrote the paper up on 9 September 2025, almost exactly a year before the post presented it as new.

What proof-of-transit actually does

The paper's core idea is a primitive the authors call Proof-of-Transit Timestamping, or PoTT: a cryptographic receipt that each relay adds as Bitcoin data crosses a slow, intermittent link, building a tamper-evident record of where a message went and when. It rides on Delay/Disruption-Tolerant Networking and optical low-Earth-orbit mesh constellations. Around that the authors sketch header-first replication, long-horizon Lightning channels watched by planetary watchtowers, and settlement through federated sidechains or blind-merge-mined commit chains. Each receipt is small. The paper puts one at roughly 203 bytes, so a ten-hop chain costs about 2 kB.

"We formalize PoTT, analyze its security model, and show how it measurably improves reliability and accountability without altering Bitcoin consensus or its monetary base," the abstract says.

That last clause is the load-bearing one. PoTT sits outside consensus, and full-node validation is unchanged. Earth keeps its base layer as it is. Mars, in the authors' design, would run a pegged commit chain or a strong federation issuing 1:1 pegged assets for local block production.

The graphic and the paper do not agree

The post's second slide reproduces the paper's title page beside an illustration of Earth and Mars, with overlays reading 0.025 BTC sending on one side and 0.025 BTC receiving on the other, both framed as instant. We could not find that amount anywhere in the paper, and it appears to be the post's own artwork, not a number the authors published. The paper's figures point the other way. It puts one-way light time between the two planets at 3 to 22 minutes across a synodic cycle, with round-trip time at twice that. An instant send-and-receive and a 3-to-22-minute one-way delay do not reconcile.

Who posted it

The lead came from the CryptoAxe account, whose profile card fills the post's third slide. It lists 2,934 posts, 107,000 followers and 138 accounts followed, and describes the operator as holding since 2017. None of those figures is independently verifiable. They are what the profile displayed when the post was captured, and they stand as the account's own claims. The same slide urges readers to follow before the algorithm buries it. Crypto posts have misdated their own source material before, and this one repeats the pattern by calling a preprint from August 2025 new. The post also credits Bitcoin Magazine, though we found no Bitcoin Magazine article matching it.

Nothing has been built yet

The paper is a proposal. It sits at version 1 on arXiv with no revision posted since August 2025, and no peer-reviewed journal version has appeared. The authors flag their own limit plainly: if both time-beacon regimes are compromised at once, PoTT falls back to administrative assertions rather than cryptographic time-anchoring. No Bitcoin software ships any of this, and no agency has funded a test of it. What the post sells as a plan for Mars is a set of ideas on a preprint server, and the gap between those two things is the whole story.
