The $8 Bitcoin Anniversary Post Cites Nakamoto Eight Months Too Late

The $8 Bitcoin Anniversary Post Cites Nakamoto Eight Months Too Late

An Instagram slide circulating this week carries a tidy claim: 15 years ago today, Bitcoin traded at $8. The post, from the account coin.space01 and watermarked thecoinrepublic.com, pins that number to 18 August 2011 and to a BitcoinTalk screenshot attributed to "nakamoto". The broad arc it points at is real. The specifics are not. The date is three weeks past, and the forum name on the screen belongs to someone whose last public post there came eight months earlier.

Today is 7 September 2026. The gap back to 18 August 2011 is 15 years and 20 days, so the anniversary in the caption passed three weeks ago. The round number holds. The word "today" does not.

One price series, and it says $11.33

StatMuse's daily record for August 2011 has Bitcoin closing at $11.33 on 18 August and $11.70 the day after. The slide toward single digits came later that month: $11.24 on 25 August, $8.93 on 26 August, $9.05 to close August. So $8 is a real 2011 level. It is not an 18 August level. Only one daily series for that exact date turned up before publication, and the big aggregators do not carry 2011 quotes at all. The $11.33 figure rests on a single dataset.

The wider year is better documented. Bitcoin reached parity with the dollar in the spring, ran to roughly $31 on Mt. Gox in June and July, then gave most of it back. One price history published by Bittime puts Bitcoin near $8 in May 2011, on the way up and not on the way down.

  • February to April 2011: $1, parity with the US dollar
  • June and July 2011: about $31 on Mt. Gox, the year's high
  • 18 August 2011: a close of $11.33
  • 26 August 2011: a close of $8.93
  • November 2011: about $2

The year's close is recorded differently in different places: near $4.70 by Bittime, about $2 in December by another price history. They do not reconcile.

The forum screen names a poster who had already left

The slide shows a BitcoinTalk thread reading "Posted by: nakamoto on Aug 18, 2011, 01:38 PM" above the line "The price is now $8 :)". Satoshi Nakamoto's last public post on that forum was 12 December 2010, a message about denial-of-service prevention, in accounts published by Blockworks and ForkLog. That is eight months before the timestamp on the slide. Nakamoto kept writing privately to early developers for a few months after. The last of it was an email to the developer Mike Hearn.

"I've moved on to other things," Nakamoto wrote to Hearn in the message Blockworks describes as his final private word to the project.

Who posted the line in the screenshot is a separate question, and it stands unestablished. The timestamp sits well after the creator's documented last public post, and that is as far as the material goes. Coins from that era do still surface. Six wallets that had sat untouched for a decade moved 553 BTC this year.

$100,000 is a record, not a price

The slide's "FROM $8 TO $100,000+" line needs a date attached to it. Bitcoin has traded above $100,000, and the record came on 6 October 2025. The size of that record is not agreed. Fortune puts the high at $126,198.07 and CoinGecko at $126,080, and the two do not reconcile. Neither is the price now. Bitcoin changed hands near $79,794 on Monday morning, inside a 24-hour band of $79,426 to $80,494 on CoinGecko, roughly 37% below the October peak. Fortune's 3 September snapshot was lower again, at $77,934.11. The market has held around these levels for weeks, and prices slipped below $79,000 once August's rally met a ceiling.

The anniversary is not due until next August

The broad shape of the post holds. Bitcoin did trade in single dollars in 2011 and has since traded above $100,000. What fails is the detail. The date is off by three weeks and the price attached to it by $3.33 on the one series available. The name on the screen is off by eight months. Whether that $8 screenshot came from a real post on some other day is still open. The next 18 August falls in 2027.
