Zcash's $1,000 Break Set a Decade High, Not an All-Time Record

Zcash traded above $1,000 on 4 September for the first time since 2016, and an Instagram post circulating this week calls that a new all-time high. It was not. ZEC printed roughly $3,192 on 28 October 2016, according to CoinReporter's 6 September account of the run, which described the September move as the first sustained four-figure trade in almost a decade. The break itself is well documented. CoinDesk reported the same day that ZEC rose about 20 percent to the $1,000 level, with some $36.6 million in leveraged positions liquidated over 24 hours and $34.5 million of that from short positions.
The record that already existed
Two of the post's three slides call the move a new all-time high while also saying ZEC returned to four-digit territory for the first time in years. The second half of that holds. The first does not, at least not on CoinReporter's numbers. BraveNewCoin, writing on 4 September, took the other side and called $1,025 an all-time high, dating it as the first in eight years and eight months. The two accounts do not reconcile, and the split turns on whether the thin 2016 launch-week tape counts as a real print. We could not establish which exchange produced the $3,192 figure.
Ten days from listing to four figures
Grayscale listed the Zcash ETF on NYSE Arca on 25 August under the ticker ZCSH, converting a trust that had been closed to ordinary buyers, at a 2.5 percent sponsor fee. Ten days separate that listing from the 4 September break, which is the interval the post cites, and the arithmetic holds. CoinReporter put launch assets near $305 million on 387,849 ZEC, rising to $414.7 million and 428,613 ZEC by 3 September. Crypto Times had the fund at $628.3 million by 10 September. A Digital Currency Group subsidiary was in talks to contribute about 200,000 ZEC in exchange for shares, CoinDesk reported.
The Binance tape the post used
The post's third slide is a screenshot of one venue, Binance's ZEC/USDT pair, taken during the 4 September session. It carries these figures:
- Last price 1,014.31, and a 24-hour change of plus 22.39 percent
- 24-hour high 1,029.22, 24-hour low 827.58
- 24-hour volume of 293,957.15 ZEC, or 274.94 million USDT
- Moving averages of 973.43 over seven periods, 932.23 over 25 and 857.78 over 99
- A local low near 803.75 on the chart before the breakout
One line matches outside reporting cleanly. CoinDesk had ZEC starting that day near $828, which sits alongside the screenshot's 827.58 low. The moving averages, the ZEC volume count and the 803.75 chart low come from that single tape, and we found no second source for them by publication time. The 274.94 million USDT figure is one pair on one exchange; CoinDesk put spot volume across the market near $1.2 billion and BraveNewCoin near $1.4 billion, and neither of those explains the other.
The session high is where the numbers spread widest. The post's caption says ZEC briefly reached around $1,020. Its own screenshot says 1,029.22. CoinDesk logged roughly $1,023, BraveNewCoin an intraday $1,032, and CoinReporter said session highs ran from $1,021 to $1,065 with some tapes tagging $1,050 and $1,086. They do not reconcile. The same gap shows in the day's gain, quoted at 22.39 percent on the screenshot against about 20 percent at CoinDesk.
"From ~$16 in 2024 to $1,025 today," the analyst CryptoPatel wrote of the run, in comments carried by BraveNewCoin on 4 September.
Eight days on, the level is being tested
The post reached this desk on 12 September, by which point the price had moved well past the screenshot. ZEC traded near $1,103 on the morning of 11 September, Crypto Times reported at 06:53 UTC, down about 10 percent from highs above $1,200 earlier that week. The peak in that stretch came just under $1,300. Futures open interest crossed $2 billion for the first time as ZEC cleared $1,200, and the 14-period RSI had fallen to 38.57 after testing about 29.
That leaves the rising 200-hour average near $1,099 as the level traders are watching, with the ETF's asset growth the other input. The record claim is the part of the post that will outlive the tape, and it is the part that does not stand up.
