Zcash Tops $1,000 With Grayscale's ZCSH ETF at $414.7 Million

Zcash crossed $1,000 on Friday for the first time since 2018. The move was worth about 20% on the day and carried ZEC back among the ten largest crypto assets by market value. Behind it sits a fund that is ten days old. Grayscale's ZCSH, the first US spot exchange-traded fund holding ZEC directly, reported $414.7 million in assets on 3 September against roughly $304 million when it started trading on 25 August. Four outlets covered Friday's session and published four different highs for it.
Four accounts, four highs
The prints do not line up. Decrypt put Friday's intraday high at $1,029, crypto.news at $1,023 and Cryptopolitan at about $1,021, while CryptoSlate reported $1,050.70 in a piece filed a day later. None of the four names the venue its print came from, and none refers to another's number. Market value scatters the same way, at about $17 billion on Decrypt's reading, $17.1 billion at CryptoSlate, $16.8 billion at crypto.news and $17.14 billion at The Crypto Times. Three of them call ZEC the tenth-largest asset and displace dogecoin to do it. The Crypto Times says eleventh. We could not establish which minute of Friday each snapshot was taken from, and the figures do not reconcile.
Ten days of a fund
ZCSH is most of the institutional story so far. Grayscale converted its Zcash Trust and listed the fund on NYSE Arca at a 2.5% sponsor fee, a charge well above what spot bitcoin funds ask. CryptoSlate reports the fund held 428,613 ZEC on 3 September against 387,849 at launch, with 5.35 million shares outstanding, and no other account reviewed here carries the coin counts. Cryptopolitan alone names Coinbase as custodian and BNY Mellon as administrator. The price had already moved once on the paperwork, when an amended registration in August lifted ZEC to an eight-year high near $855. Assets are about $110 million higher than they were at listing.
Shorts on the wrong side
Traders positioned against the rally paid for it. Short liquidations over 24 hours read as $34.5 million at Decrypt, crypto.news and The Crypto Times, and as about $40 million at CryptoSlate. Decrypt separately counts $36.6 million in total ZEC liquidations, which is a wider measure and not a third version of the same figure. Open interest in ZEC futures crossed $2 billion for the first time on CryptoSlate's account; The Crypto Times gives about $2.15 billion. The 30-day gain is 94% at Decrypt and "nearly 100%" at CryptoSlate. What every account shares is the twelve-month number, close to 2,300% against a price near $40 a year ago.
Privacy sells while the rules tighten
Demand and regulation are moving in opposite directions here. crypto.news reports that more than 30% of ZEC supply now sits in shielded addresses against 8% before, with the shielded pool above $1 billion in mid-August, and that the SEC closed a nearly two-year investigation into the Zcash Foundation in January with no enforcement action. Both details rest on that one account. The same report counts at least ten countries restricting privacy-coin trading and notes that Europe's MiCA regime targets a ban in 2027. A US-listed fund now sells the asset through ordinary brokerage accounts.
"Privacy is just one property of Zcash," the cryptographer Arjun Khemani said in comments carried by CryptoSlate on 5 September, arguing the asset could grow into "a form of sovereign money."
Where the buying came from is the part nobody has shown. The fund's holdings grew by about 41,000 ZEC in ten days, which is a small share of the volume that moved on Friday alone, and no outlet reviewed here separates fund creation from spot demand. Grayscale's head of research sketched a scenario reaching $8,100 at a tenth of bitcoin's market value, a conditional the Crypto Times carries and nobody else does. The next fund disclosure covers the days after the $1,000 print. That is when the split shows.
