Bitcoin Slips Under $80,000 Two Days Before the Fed Decision

Bitcoin Slips Under $80,000 Two Days Before the Fed Decision

Bitcoin traded below $80,000 through Monday, two days before the Federal Reserve's October decision. Five accounts published between 04:37 and 14:11 UTC put the price in five different places. The week carries the rate decision on Wednesday, then September PCE inflation and the first estimate of third-quarter growth on Thursday morning. Traders cut exposure before any of it. Ether and XRP both fell further than bitcoin did.

Five snapshots, five prices

CoinDesk, filing at 04:37 UTC, had bitcoin down nearly 2% at about $79,800 in the Asian morning. The Crypto Times, reading CoinGecko at roughly 05:50 UTC, gave $80,029 and a 1% fall. crypto.news, publishing at 08:39 UTC, showed $80,152 and a decline of 0.29%. COINTURK, filing in the afternoon, put the session low at $79,330 in one passage and at $79,200 in another, without reconciling the two. The Cryptonomist reproduced CoinDesk's figures in its text while its own ticker bar showed $80,484, captured, it said, at a different moment.

None of that is contradiction in the ordinary sense. Each reading is a snapshot of a moving price at a different hour. The spread is what the day looks like: about $350 between the quotes and close to $1,000 between the lowest print read here and the highest. crypto.news puts the weekend trough near $79,100, a five-week low.

What Wednesday settles

The Federal Open Market Committee meets on 27 and 28 October. The decision is due at 2:00 pm ET on Wednesday, with the chair's press conference half an hour after it. Markets widely expect no change. The committee raised its target range by 25 basis points on 16 September, to 3.75% to 4.00%, after holding through the first half of the year. September inflation then ran above forecast on headline and core alike. What is open this week is the tone on December, not the level now. One account read here says no new Summary of Economic Projections is due, which would leave the press conference as the only fresh signal. No second account confirms it.

Jeff Mei, chief operating officer of the exchange BTSE, told CoinDesk that "all eyes are on the Fed meeting and it already seems like investors are de-risking."

Mei also said the Fed "could very well adopt an aggressive tone, which means higher rates and less liquidity for crypto and stocks." The Cryptonomist paraphrases the same analyst without quoting him, so that wording rests on CoinDesk alone.

Where the money left

US spot bitcoin funds lost money on both sessions at the end of last week. COINTURK, reading Farside Investors data, puts Thursday's redemption at $635.6 million and Friday's at $137.9 million, a two-session total of about $773.5 million. The same account says the funds still closed the five-day period net positive. Thursday's number sits with the $635 million that turned October negative a second time. That is agreement and not corroboration, since both readings come off one dashboard.

Ether funds ran a longer streak. The Crypto Times, also citing Farside, counts about $220.7 million out over the 19 to 23 October sessions and about $830 million since 7 October. One account carries those totals and nothing read here checks them.

The level under the level

The floor bitcoin lost last Thursday was $82,500, and CoinDesk says reclaiming it is what stabilisation looks like. Above it sits resistance at $84,000 to $85,000, a band the price failed to reach last week. The Crypto Times is careful about the round number below. The $80,000 mark, it says, is "a widely watched psychological threshold, not a guaranteed support level". COINTURK attributes an accumulation zone of $80,000 to $82,000 to QCP Capital, a trading firm in Singapore. One desk's levels, and no consensus.

Equities gave the same signal. Nasdaq 100 futures were a tenth lower and the Kospi fell 1%, after Goldman Sachs cut its twelve-month target for the index by a quarter. Total crypto market value came to about $2.74 trillion on The Crypto Times' snapshot, down 2.5% in a day. Wednesday settles the rate. It does not settle December, and the PCE reading that bears most on December lands the morning after.
