Tether Books $1.5B in Q3 Profit and Doubles Its Reserve Buffer

Tether published its third-quarter attestation on Friday, and the figure that moved is the cushion. The company reported $1.5 billion of net operating profit for the quarter and $4.5 billion across the first three quarters of 2026. Its excess reserves, the amount by which assets exceed what it owes holders, came to $7.95 billion at the end of September against about $4.1 billion three months earlier. Total reserve assets stood at $191.5 billion. USDT in circulation barely moved at all, holding near $184 billion across the nine months.
Issuance stayed flat while the cushion grew
That combination is the quarter in one line. Tether describes issuance as broadly steady, so the $3.8 billion added to the buffer did not come from selling more tokens. It came from what the reserves earned. The precise numbers in the report put assets at $191,451,091,374 and the buffer at $7,954,630,470, with tokens issued carried as a liability of $183.47 billion. CoinCentral noted on Saturday that the $184 billion Tether uses in prose and the $183.47 billion on the liability line are the same quantity rounded differently, which is worth knowing before anyone reads a gap into it.
Where the $191.5 billion sits
US Treasury bills, held directly and indirectly, account for $132.4 billion of the pile. The Cryptonomist broke that down further on Saturday morning, into $122.84 billion held directly, $9.52 billion of overnight reverse repos and $7.18 billion of term reverse repos, and put cash and short-term deposits at $139.58 billion, about 72.9% of reserves. No other account read here carries that split, so it rests on one reading. Two accounts give physical gold at $19.08 billion in LBMA standard bars, the same reserve line whose fund won a Shariah compliance certification in July. Bitcoin is carried at $8.37 billion. CoinCentral alone adds that the bitcoin line was near $5.8 billion in June, and nothing else in this sweep confirms the comparison.
What a single-date opinion can say
BDO prepared the report.
Securities.io, reading the document itself rather than the press release, said BDO issued a reasonable assurance opinion limited to the stated total assets and liabilities at one point in time, and that the figures are management assertions. That is a narrower thing than an audit of a year. It establishes what the balance sheet looked like on 30 September and says nothing about any other day of the quarter. Tether's first full audit, by KPMG, came back unqualified in August, and the company kept that report private. Friday's attestation is the public document, and its scope is the scope BDO describes.
Flat supply is the line to watch
Paolo Ardoino, the chief executive, put the quarter in terms of redemptions.
"Our responsibility is to make sure USD₮ remains dependable when people need it most," Ardoino said.
On CoinCentral's reading of DefiLlama data, USDT is about 60% of a $297.3 billion stablecoin market; the same account says Ardoino has put the user base past 700 million, and no other report read here carries either figure. The number with the least ambiguity in it is the flat one. Supply that has not grown in nine months while the buffer behind it nearly doubles describes a business earning on a stock it is not adding to. Whether that holds is what the next attestation settles.
