Coinbase Auto-Converts 14 Non-MiCA Tokens for EEA Customers

Coinbase Auto-Converts 14 Non-MiCA Tokens for EEA Customers

Retail customers of Coinbase in the European Economic Area lost access to fourteen tokens on Friday. The exchange had already switched off buying, selling and converting them, so moving the coins to an outside wallet was the only way to keep them, and whatever was left on the platform at the cutoff went through a one-time conversion. Balances go into USDC where that works and into another supported asset or currency where it does not. The rate is the prevailing market rate, not a guaranteed one for one. Tokens of the same kind deposited after 30 October will not be credited.

The list is not all stablecoins

Three accounts read this week give the same fourteen: USDT, PYUSD, DAI, PAXG, USD1, PAX, GUSD, GYEN, BUST, UST, RAI, MUSD, USDS and TGBP. A fourth, Coin Edition, names six and leaves the rest unidentified. Most coverage calls the group fourteen stablecoins, and two entries do not fit the label. PAXG is backed by gold, not by dollars. UST is the Terra token that broke its peg in 2022 and never got it back.

The same reports part company on where the money ends up. Two of them describe the conversion plainly as into USDC. The other two carry Coinbase's own qualifier, "where suitable", with another supported asset or currency as the fallback. The accounts do not reconcile, and the exchange has published no breakdown of which balances went which way. Anyone who missed the cutoff can try its process for unsupported assets, which comes with no promise of success.

What the rules actually require

MiCA's transitional period for stablecoin issuers ended on 1 July 2026 and was not extended, which left venues holding assets from issuers with no European authorisation. ESMA addressed that on 8 October: firms licensed under MiCA have to stop offering services in non-compliant stablecoins, though supervisors may allow limited activity so holders can sell, convert or withdraw. National authorities were given three months to clear the remaining exposures, an outer date of 8 January 2027. Coinbase moved more than two months ahead of it. The cutoff binds only the customers served by its Luxembourg entity, which holds the MiCA licence and is supervised by the CSSF.

Nor is Coinbase the first venue in Europe to drop the largest of these tokens. One account read here says Revolut stopped supporting USDT for European customers after the July deadline passed; no other report checked carries it. The Luxembourg entity is a separate company from Coinbase Ireland, the e-money arm fined by the central bank there this month, and the licence that governs Friday's conversion sits with the former.

A conversion can be a taxable event

Coinbase warned that swapping one asset for another may count as a disposal under national tax law and pointed to Germany, where the conversion can trigger capital gains treatment and restart the one-year holding clock on whatever the customer ends up with. That is a cost the rules do not mention and the customer cannot avoid, since selling was already blocked. The company says it may restore support if an asset's regulatory standing changes. Conversions already done will not be unwound.

USDC has its own deadline coming

The asset most of these balances landed in is about to carry heavier obligations of its own. The European Banking Authority designated USDC the bloc's first significant e-money token on 14 October, with the extra supervisory requirements attaching from 12 November. Neither Coinbase nor the regulators have published how much value moved on Friday, and no account read here puts a number on the affected balances. We could not establish how many customers were caught by the cutoff. The figure that would show it, if it is ever disclosed, is USDC's European supply before and after 30 October.
