Block Puts Bitcoin Lightning Into x402, the AI Agent Payment Standard

Block Puts Bitcoin Lightning Into x402, the AI Agent Payment Standard

Block has put bitcoin's Lightning network inside x402, the payment standard built so that software can buy things with no person at the checkout. The company joined the x402 Foundation and contributed the Lightning support, announcing it on Thursday. x402 runs on the HTTP 402 "Payment Required" response: an agent asks a server for an API call or a dataset, the server answers with payment instructions, the agent pays and resubmits with proof. No account, no card, no API key. Almost none of the money moving through the standard today is bitcoin.

What Lightning is doing there

Lightning is the layer built on top of bitcoin for small, fast payments, and the case for putting it under an agent standard is the transaction profile. Machine buying is high in volume and tiny in value. Blockonomi describes Lightning settling within seconds at costs usually under a cent, a description that appears in one account here and not across the sweep.

"Bringing Lightning to x402 is a concrete step toward making Bitcoin everyday money for people and the agents acting on their behalf," said Steve Lee, who heads Spiral, Block's bitcoin development arm.

Two outlets carry that sentence word for word and a third paraphrases it. CoinCentral reports a code repository commit dated 23 September referencing "exact Lightning on lnbtc", which would put the work in place before Thursday's announcement; no other account mentions the commit. The Lightning developer stack has come up here before, when the Lightning Development Kit patched a splice fee bug and a restart failure.

Stablecoins carry the volume

The standard is busy, and it is not busy in bitcoin. The foundation's own site shows 75.41 million transactions and $24.24 million of volume over the past 30 days, figures CoinCentral and Crypto Economy both publish, with CoinCentral adding 94,060 buyers and 22,000 sellers in the same window. Those two totals put the average payment at about 32 cents, which is the kind of traffic the standard was designed to carry. CoinCentral also reports, citing Circle, that USDC accounted for 99.3% of x402 payment volume in the most recent measured quarter. That share sits in one account. Crypto Economy says stablecoins dominate and puts no number on it, which is as far as the sweep supports.

Stablecoin rails have been building this kind of capacity for a while. Visa's own stablecoin settlement reached a $20 billion annual run rate earlier this year, on the card network's figures.

When the foundation started depends on the account

The dates do not line up. Cointelegraph, whose story went out at 05:04 GMT on Friday, says the x402 Foundation launched in April 2024 under the Linux Foundation. Blockonomi says April 2026. The foundation's own announcement dates its operational launch to 14 July 2026 and says the intent to launch was made public that April. The primary source is what this desk follows, and the three accounts do not reconcile. That x402 was created by Coinbase and later contributed to the Linux Foundation is not in dispute anywhere.

Membership is the part that explains why a bitcoin rail matters here at all. The launch announcement names Adyen, Amazon Web Services, American Express, Circle, Cloudflare, Coinbase, Fiserv, Google, Mastercard, MoonPay, Ripple, Shopify, the Solana Foundation, Stripe and Visa among its premier members, inside a body of 40 organizations as of July. Card networks, payment processors and blockchains sit in the same room. Until this week none of the settlement options on offer there was bitcoin.

No product date

Block has not said when any of this reaches a customer. Square, Cash App and Bitkey all sit inside the company, and none of Friday's accounts carries a timeline for Lightning x402 payments showing up in them; the commitment on the record is to continued Lightning work and to taking part in the foundation. Block is also in the Universal Commerce Protocol, a separate effort aimed at AI-driven commerce for small businesses. What this week settles is that an agent can be handed a bitcoin payment option. What it leaves open is whether anything picks it over a stablecoin.
