Robinhood Puts Voting and 1:1 Share Redemption on Its Token Roadmap

Robinhood Puts Voting and 1:1 Share Redemption on Its Token Roadmap

Robinhood's chief executive said on Monday evening that holders of the brokerage's Stock Tokens will be able to swap them for the shares underneath, and to vote those shares. Vlad Tenev gave no date for either. Johann Kerbrat, who runs crypto and international there, put redemptions in active development and voting on a roadmap. Those are two different stages. Nothing about the product changed on Monday. What changed is what Robinhood says is coming.

Two features, two stages of readiness

Tenev's line was short. "In-kind redemption and voting are coming for Robinhood Stock Tokens," he wrote, in wording CoinDesk carried at 21:05 UTC on Monday. Kerbrat's version, in the same piece, keeps the two apart: the company is "actively working on redemptions for shares 1:1 with voting for eligible Stock Token holders on the roadmap." Traders Union, filing 19 minutes later, carried a shorter variant of the same sentence. Voting would run through Say by Robinhood, the company's own proxy-voting platform, on accounts from CoinDesk and ETH Daily. Nothing in this sweep attaches a date to either.

What a holder owns depends on who is describing it

The accounts split on the part that matters. CoinDesk described the tokens on Monday as debt instruments issued through a Jersey-domiciled subsidiary, giving price exposure without the benefits of ownership. Crypto Briefing and ETH Daily both carried Kerbrat saying the tokens are backed one-for-one by real shares held in custody, with ETH Daily adding that Robinhood buys the matching shares whenever new tokens are minted. Those are not the same claim, and neither account acknowledges the other. Robinhood's own disclosure, quoted by Cryptopolitan on 6 September, said the tokens give "economic exposure to the underlying security, but neither legal nor beneficial ownership". The issuer is Robinhood Assets (Jersey) Limited. Dividends reach holders as economic equivalents through reinvestment, not as cash from the tracked company.

That disclosure is what Adam Aron was pointing at when AMC Entertainment's chief executive demanded Robinhood pull its AMC token in early September, arguing the brokerage never asked AMC and that holders had none of a shareholder's rights. Robinhood refused the same day. Monday's statement leaves the registration question where Aron left it. It answers the rights one, eventually.

Armstrong got there first

Coinbase made a version of the same promise the same day. Brian Armstrong described his own product in terms that read as a contrast with the Jersey structure.

"No synthetics or debt instruments, real fully-backed securities, redeemable for the underlying shares, with dividends integrated, and voting rights coming soon," Armstrong said.

The line went out through crypto.news at 15:43 UTC, five and a half hours before CoinDesk filed on Robinhood. Coinbase's redemption is already running: verified holders can request it at a 0.05% fee, subject to compliance checks. Dividends there are reinvested too, after a 5% fee and taxes, with the issuer buying more shares and adjusting the deposit ratio. Voting is not live at Coinbase either. Vested holders may submit instructions and the exchange attempts to vote for them, an indirect route the same account says depends on regulation and timing. CoinDesk wrote that Coinbase had announced voting rights additions to its tokenized equities. We used the account that describes the mechanism.

Two sets of numbers that cannot be set against each other

Robinhood's Stock Tokens hold more than $170 million, and Robinhood Chain has cleared nearly $50 billion of decentralized exchange volume, figures Crypto Briefing and ETH Daily print identically. Neither says what period the $50 billion covers, so the total has no window around it. Coinbase's disclosure is narrower and dated: $730.9 million traded in its tokenized stock category over 30 days, and $100 million of it on 13 September alone. One figure is a whole chain and the other one product line. Robinhood Chain, which opened on 1 July, has been the louder of the two in revenue terms.

The open question is a calendar. Redemption and voting exist as descriptions, with no ship date, jurisdiction list or regulator's sign-off attached. Until one of those arrives, a Stock Token is what the disclosure says it is.
