NYSE Owner ICE Backs Trade.xyz for a US Perpetual Futures Venue

NYSE Owner ICE Backs Trade.xyz for a US Perpetual Futures Venue

Intercontinental Exchange, owner of the New York Stock Exchange, said on Thursday it is investing in trade[XYZ] and that the two will build a US market for perpetual futures on Hyperliquid infrastructure. The venue needs clearance from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, the US derivatives regulator, and does not have it. No amount was disclosed, no stake and no launch date. Contracts would cover equities, equity indexes, commodities, foreign exchange and crypto, reached through participating brokers and trading platforms. Stan Druckenmiller is investing too.

What is announced and what is filed

Unchained reports no filing with the CFTC and no approval from it, and says ICE had published nothing of its own by the time that account went up at 11:41 UTC, having not responded to a request for comment. crypto.news adds that neither company has named the registered exchange or the clearing entity, or said whether they will use a licence someone already holds or apply for new ones. 36Crypto, publishing at 15:12 UTC, sets out the division of labour: ICE brings regulated-exchange, clearing and risk-management experience, trade[XYZ] brings the trading technology. CoinDesk alone reports a name for the venue, ICE[XYZ]. That sits on one account.

"Innovation and the protections of U.S. regulation shouldn't be a trade-off," trade[XYZ] said in a statement carried by crypto.news.

A year of volume, all of it self-reported

trade[XYZ] says its Hyperliquid markets have handled more than $650 billion in a little over a year. All four accounts read here repeat that figure and none of them checks it. A further set of numbers appears in crypto.news only: $202.36 billion of volume in the second quarter of 2026 on Hyperliquid Research Collective data, with $58.9 billion of it in equity-linked contracts. The same account dates the platform's NIFTY 50 perpetual futures to 27 October, with up to 20x leverage and USDC settlement. In March, S&P Dow Jones Indices licensed the S&P 500 for a perpetual contract offered to investors outside the United States, which CoinDesk and Unchained both carry. Those markets keep running and stay closed to US customers, as does Hyperliquid itself.

Two ways onshore, two different builds

A perpetual future is a derivative with no expiry date, held open by periodic funding payments between the long and short sides. Kraken's parent Payward took another route on 26 October, proposing permissioned HIP-3 markets through its CFTC-regulated Bitnomial businesses with NinjaTrader Clearing on customer accounts; CryptoJazz covered Hyperliquid naming Payward its first CFTC-regulated HIP-3 deployer the following day. ICE is not borrowing a licence that way. It is proposing a new exchange and a new clearinghouse. The company has bought into this kind of plumbing before, taking a stake in tZERO and a licence on 103 blockchain patents in September, and CoinDesk says it agreed last October to put up to $2 billion into Polymarket. The Polymarket figure appears in that account alone.

What the announcement leaves open

The HYPE token's response is reported once and loosely. crypto.news, at 11:20 UTC, had it briefly near $86 and about $85 at press time, up 3.6% over 24 hours. CoinDesk's page carried a ticker at $93.42, up 17.11%, with no timestamp on it, so nothing ties that reading to the news; Unchained and 36Crypto report no move at all. Nothing in the announcement says whether HYPE would have a role in the planned venue, as collateral or otherwise. No account establishes that the CFTC has the proposal in front of it. Until a registrant is named and a clearinghouse exists, what is dated here is an undisclosed investment and a statement of intent.
