UniCredit Is Picking a Crypto Custody Partner, Bloomberg Reports

UniCredit Is Picking a Crypto Custody Partner, Bloomberg Reports

UniCredit is hunting for a technology partner to run crypto trading, digital asset custody and tokenized products for its clients, Bloomberg reported on Friday. The talks are early. Areas of interest include custody and brokerage capabilities, along with stablecoin-based fixed-income securities, according to the report, which Cointelegraph and crypto.news both picked up the same day. Neither outlet added sourcing of its own, so the account rests on the people familiar with the plans who spoke to Bloomberg. UniCredit has published nothing about the search.

What the bank is said to be shopping for

The item on the table is infrastructure, not a balance-sheet position. Custody means holding client keys; brokerage means routing client orders. A bank that buys both from a vendor can offer regulated crypto access without writing the software itself. Other lenders took that route first. Citi added digital-asset custody under its Custody+ brand, and JPMorgan has spent the year widening client access to crypto while its chief executive keeps calling Bitcoin a pet rock.

The four million already on the books

One piece of this is done and documented. UniCredit put 4 million euros into BlockInvest, an Italian tokenization startup, for a stake of about 16 percent. The bank announced it on 15 April, and Ledger Insights reported the same amount and the same share a day later. BlockInvest builds infrastructure for tokenizing real-world assets, and UniCredit said at the time that it wanted to export those tools across the group's main markets. The bank has already executed a natively digital minibond in Italy and a tokenized structured note on a public blockchain for wealth clients.

"UniCredit investment is the recognition of a rigorous and ambitious growth path. We are facing a paradigm shift where technological innovation is no longer an ancillary element, but the very backbone of the market," said Lorenzo Rigatti, chief executive and co-founder of BlockInvest.

Where the consortium tallies stop matching

UniCredit also sits inside Qivalis, the multibank euro stablecoin venture launched by ten European lenders including BNP Paribas, ING and CaixaBank. Writing up the Bloomberg story on Friday, crypto.news put the group at 37 member banks across 15 European countries as of May, after 25 institutions joined the original ten. Ten plus 25 is 35. The two figures do not reconcile, and neither account says which one is current.

The post behind this story

The lead reached this desk as an Instagram carousel from The Bitcoin Conference account, and its third slide was promotion rather than reporting. That slide showed the account at 3,281 posts, 286K followers and 487 accounts followed. Those are screenshot figures, and we found no second source for any of the three by publication time. The event dates on the same slide do hold up against the organizer's own listings: Amsterdam on 5 and 6 November 2026 at the Sugar Factory, Nashville on 15 to 17 July 2027, Hong Kong on 26 and 27 August 2027, and a MENA edition in Abu Dhabi carrying a 9 December 2027 date, which is the late-2027 slot the slide advertised.

What a signed vendor would settle

Nothing is signed. Bloomberg's account describes preliminary discussions, and the bank has named no provider, no launch window and no list of supported assets. A contract would answer the questions that matter to clients, starting with who holds the keys and which assets clear. Until one appears, the confirmed part of this story is the BlockInvest stake and the tokenized paper UniCredit has already issued.
