Coinbase Retires the Base App Name 14 Months After Adopting It

Coinbase Retires the Base App Name 14 Months After Adopting It

Coinbase has taken its own name back off the shelf. The company said on Thursday that the Base App, which it renamed from Coinbase Wallet in July 2025, reverts to the Coinbase Wallet name. Balances are untouched, and the app updates in place on iOS and Android. What changes is the pitch: multichain trading and access to assets, in place of the social feed the 2025 relaunch was built around. Fourteen months separate the two announcements.

The retreat came in stages

Thursday's rename finished something that began in March, when Brian Armstrong said the social experiment had not quite worked. In July the product passed to Jordan Fish, who goes by Cobie, and Jesse Pollak turned back to the Base chain itself. Parameter attributes to Pollak the line that interest in social features had disintegrated completely, a remark that appears in that outlet alone and carries no date. The company's own framing is shorter.

"Coinbase prides itself on being able to move quickly and pivot when needed," said Ryan Kass, the head of Coinbase Wallet product, in remarks The Block carried.

What is in the app now

Trading is the whole pitch. The Block counts more than ten networks in the wallet, with Robinhood Chain and Monad the most recent additions. Parameter counts eleven and names them: Base, Bitcoin, Ethereum, Solana, BNB Chain, Optimism, Arbitrum, Polygon, Avalanche, Monad and Robinhood Chain. The naming is that outlet's alone, and the two counts sit together without contradicting each other.

Beyond spot trading the app routes perpetual futures through Hyperliquid, contracts with no expiry date that track a price through funding payments passed between long and short holders. Tokenized stocks and a way to copy other traders' positions sit alongside them. Parameter puts the perpetual markets at more than 290, with leverage of up to 50 times, and says derivatives stay closed to users in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada. Both of those details rest on that one outlet.

Two names doing two jobs

The split Coinbase describes is a clean one. Base is the chain and the ecosystem around it, the thing that activated the B20 token standard earlier this year. Coinbase Wallet is the self-custodial application, meaning the keys sit with the user and not with the exchange. Kass calls it Coinbase's self-custodial front door to the everything exchange, the company's term for one venue covering every asset class. The line the app itself carries is blunter: trade anything, anywhere, without asking permission.

The figures nobody put out

Not one of the four accounts carries a user number, for the Base App period or for the wallet that preceded it. The Block reports that Coinbase declined to give fee details or to say whether the trading expansion had lifted adoption. CryptoBriefing quotes the company citing real-world asset tokenization up more than 200 times year on year as part of the reasoning, with no base period and no absolute figure attached, and no other outlet carries that claim. The case for the pivot therefore rests on what Coinbase says about the market, not on anything it has published about the app.

Nothing released on Thursday says what becomes of the social feed, the messaging or the mini apps the Base App was assembled around. They go unmentioned. Renaming an app is cheap and reversible, as this week demonstrates twice over; the harder question is whether the people who installed it for one product stay for a different one.
