Bitcoin Holds Above $82,000 as October Hike Odds Fall to 32%

September producer prices rose 1.3% on the month, the sharpest monthly increase TokenPost could place since March 2022, and bitcoin spent Thursday below $80,000 for the first time since mid-September. By Friday it had come back. The three data providers checked put it between roughly $82,000 and $83,300, while the market's reading of the Federal Reserve moved the other way: traders cut the odds of an increase at the 27-28 October meeting to 32%. Friday's numbers do not agree with one another.

Inside the print

The index landed at 08:30 ET on 15 October, a day after the September consumer price index ran above forecast and bitcoin gave up $82,000. Final demand goods rose 2.6% and services 0.8%, figures TokenPost, KuCoin and BlockchainReporter all carry identically. Year over year the index reached 6.3%, which TokenPost calls the largest annual gain since December 2022. Energy did much of the work, up 10.8%, with gasoline up 20.3%. A narrower measure that strips out food, energy and trade services rose 0.5% on the month and 5% over twelve months. None of the outlets swept gives the forecast the print beat, so the size of the miss is not something this story can state.

Three providers, three bitcoins

CoinGecko put bitcoin at about $83,300 on Friday morning, up 0.3% over 24 hours, in a day range of roughly $82,900 to $84,200. CoinMarketCap, cited by Blockhead the same morning, had about $82,060, up 0.7%, in a day range of roughly $79,800 to $82,500. Those two ranges do not overlap anywhere. Yahoo Finance, working from opening prices, logged $82,132.23 at the open and $82,711.01 at 07:22 ET. The weekly direction splits as well: down 2.9% on one reading, roughly flat on a second, up 0.6% on the third.

Part of the gap is timing. KuCoin's own page ticker read $81,556.20 while its text said $83,300, and BlockchainReporter's read $82,156.30 against the same figure. Snapshots taken minutes apart in a market that moves a percent in an hour will not line up. The day ranges are a different problem, and they do not reconcile.

The flow data points both ways

Both accounts cite Farside Investors, and both cover the same session. KuCoin and BlockchainReporter report a $5.1 million net inflow into US spot bitcoin ETFs on 15 October. Blockhead reports that Thursday as a preliminary net outflow of $7.6 million, inside a week it describes as outflows on five of the last seven trading days, with Tuesday at $175.7 million in and Wednesday at $261.4 million out. One of those signs is wrong. We could not establish which reading supersedes the other, and only Blockhead labels its figure preliminary.

What the late-October meeting carries now

The odds moved after two Federal Reserve officials spoke. CME FedWatch had the probability of an October increase at 32%, down from 54%, on Blockhead's Friday account; KuCoin and BlockchainReporter put the same slide at above 50% beforehand and roughly 27% to 32% after. The floor differs, the endpoint does not.

Another increase would likely be needed, San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly said, while adding there was "no urgency to act," in remarks Blockhead reported on Friday.

Governor Michelle Bowman, in the same account, said the Fed had time after September's quarter-point increase to watch how markets and the economy respond. Blockhead is the only outlet swept carrying either comment, so both rest on one source. The ten-year Treasury yield is given as about 5.08% by Blockhead and about 5.10% by the other two, close but not the same number. The next consumer price reading lands on 10 November, two weeks after the meeting it cannot inform.
