Italian Bank Banca Sella Becomes First in the Country to Launch Crypto Services Under MiCA

European banks continue to enter the crypto space, and now it is happening officially and by the book. Banca Sella, a major Italian bank with around $54 billion in assets under management, has officially notified the country’s central bank and received approval to launch cryptocurrency services. The organization has become the first traditional bank in Italy to legally operate with digital assets under the new European MiCA regulation.

What Exactly Is the Bank Planning to Do?

All the preparation is already complete. Italian bank Banca Sella did not reinvent the wheel and instead focused on the core, yet most in-demand infrastructure for major players. They plan to launch two main areas by the end of 2026:

  • Custody Services. The bank will securely hold Bitcoin and other digital assets on its blockchain platforms.

  • Direct Transfers. Clients will be able to transfer cryptocurrency within a regulated banking framework.

Initially, these services will be tested on corporate clients and institutionals. For large companies, a legal and transparent custodian backed by an established bank is essentially the primary and safest way to start working with crypto without regulatory risks.

Why Does This Matter for the Market?

For a long time, traditional financial institutions in Europe steered clear of the crypto market due to a lack of clear laws. This situation completely changed with the MiCA framework, which provided clear rules of the game.

The example of Banca Sella clearly demonstrates where the European trend is heading. Banks are no longer trying to ignore the industry, nor are they pushing volatile trading tools to retail clients. Instead, they are systematically building a reliable B2B foundation, integrating Bitcoin into familiar financial platforms. It is highly likely that more major players across Europe will start securing similar licenses in the coming months.
