Why Did My Debit Card Get Declined Buying Crypto?

A debit card decline is usually about how much the bank lets you spend online in one go, or what it thinks is actually available in the account - not a ban on crypto. Debit is the card type most likely to be allowed through in the first place, because nothing is being borrowed and no cash advance fee is involved. So when a debit card fails, the cause tends to be smaller and more fixable than it feels.

Your available balance is not your balance

Banks reserve money before they take it. A hotel, a fuel pump or a car hire desk can sit on a few hundred for days, and so can your own earlier attempt at the same crypto purchase. Each failed try can leave a pre-authorisation hold behind, so the third attempt is checked against a smaller number than the first. Think of it as a jacket held behind the counter: not sold, not yours to wear either. Check the available figure in your banking app rather than the headline balance, and give earlier holds a day or two to clear.

Online caps you did not know you had

Most debit cards carry a limit on a single online payment that is separate from the daily ATM limit, and it is often lower than people expect - a few hundred to a thousand in your own currency is typical. Banking apps usually let you lift it yourself for twenty-four hours. Splitting one purchase into two smaller ones works just as well, as long as you leave a gap between them.

Details that have to match exactly

The billing address you type must match the one your bank holds, down to the apartment number, and the name on the card must match the name you verified on the exchange. A card belonging to a partner or a company will be refused even when the payment itself would clear. Prepaid cards and single-use virtual numbers are refused almost everywhere on-ramps operate.

Before you try the amount you actually want, buy a small one - the equivalent of ten dollars - and see it land. It is the same habit as sending a test transaction before moving real coins, and it turns a guessing game into one cheap experiment. Why a card does not work to buy crypto at all covers the bank-level blocks, and the full reasons-and-fixes list has the rest.
