Why Did My Crypto Purchase Not Go Through, or Why Is It Still Pending?

A crypto purchase that did not go through and one that is still pending are two different problems, and telling them apart is most of the work. A declined purchase was stopped before any money moved, almost always by your bank. A pending purchase was accepted and is now waiting on something - a review, a bank transfer, or the blockchain itself. The first needs a fix. The second mostly needs patience.
Think of it like a parcel. A declined order was never accepted at the counter. A pending one already has a tracking number.
Declined means the money never left
If the error appeared the moment you pressed buy, your card was refused. Banks block crypto merchants as a category, treat the purchase as a cash advance, or flag an unfamiliar merchant as fraud. The charge sitting on your statement afterwards is a pre-authorisation hold, not a payment. It drops off on the bank's own schedule, usually within a few days. There is no refund to request, because nothing was taken.
Pending has three usual causes
First, a compliance review. A large first purchase on an exchange gets a human look, and that can take hours rather than seconds. Second, the funding leg: if you paid by bank transfer rather than card, the money takes one to three working days to arrive before any coins are bought. Third, the blockchain. Once the platform sends your Bitcoin or Ethereum, the network has to confirm it, which is minutes on a quiet day and longer when the network is busy.
How to tell which one you have
Open the order in your account history rather than reading the home screen. A failed order says declined, failed or cancelled, and the coin amount is blank. A pending one shows the amount you agreed to buy and a status next to it. If it shows a transaction id, paste that id into a block explorer: if the network has it, your purchase happened and only confirmation is outstanding.
Practical rule: wait a full working day before contacting anyone, and do not retry a declined card three times in a row - repeated failures trip fraud controls and leave more holds on your balance. If it was declined rather than pending, the three checkpoints a crypto payment passes will tell you where it stopped, and the common reasons and fixes covers the rest.
