Who Is Satoshi Nakamoto? The Anonymous Creator of Bitcoin

Satoshi Nakamoto is the name used by whoever created Bitcoin. Nobody has proved who that was. The name published a design in 2008, released the software in 2009, worked on it in public for about two years, and then stopped writing altogether.

What is actually known

In October 2008 a nine-page document titled Bitcoin: A Peer-to-Peer Electronic Cash System was posted to a mailing list for people interested in cryptography. It described a way to send money online without a bank in the middle. Three months later the software went live and the first block was mined. Satoshi then spent roughly two years answering questions on forums, fixing bugs and mailing other developers, all in writing. Never a photo, never a voice, never a meeting. In 2011 came a last message about having moved on to other things, and that was it.

What was left behind

Before going quiet, Satoshi handed control of the code repository to another developer and stepped away from the project entirely. Roughly a million bitcoin mined in the earliest days are widely believed to belong to the same person or group. Those coins have never moved. They are watched constantly, and any spend from those addresses would be noticed within minutes.

Why the anonymity matters

It is not only a mystery for its own sake. Bitcoin has no founder to interview, no chief executive to lean on, and nobody whose opinion settles an argument. Changes happen because enough developers, miners and users adopt them, not because anyone decrees them. Compare that with Ethereum, where Vitalik Buterin is a public figure whose views carry real weight. Both arrangements work. They just fail in different ways.

About the candidates

Plenty of people have been named over the years, by journalists and by researchers. Some denied it, some stayed quiet, one was named in a magazine and turned out to be an entirely unconnected man with a similar name. No claim has ever been backed by the one piece of evidence that would settle it: a signed message from the keys that mined those early coins.
