What Is Nansen On-Chain Analytics?

Nansen is a paid website that reads public blockchain data and attaches labels to wallet addresses. Every transfer on Ethereum, Solana and dozens of other chains is already visible to anyone - the hard part is that an address is a meaningless string of characters. Nansen's job is to turn that string into something like "a fund", "an exchange's hot wallet", or "a trader who has been early to several winners".

How does the labelling work?

Partly by deduction, partly by hand. Some addresses identify themselves: an exchange's deposit wallets, a protocol's treasury contract. Others get labelled by behaviour - a wallet that has repeatedly bought tokens before they rose gets filed with other wallets that did the same. Think of it as a neighbourhood directory. The names on the doors were worked out by people walking the street, which is also why some of them are wrong, and why some residents moved out long ago.

What is Smart Money?

It is Nansen's name for the wallets it rates as consistently successful, grouped so you can see what that crowd is buying as a whole. This is the feature most people subscribe for. It is also the one to treat with the most suspicion: the group is chosen by looking backwards, and a wallet that called the last three winners has no obligation to call the next one. Copying a position you see there means buying after the buyer, without knowing their size, their time horizon or their hedges.

What it cannot tell you

Intent, and anything off-chain. The chain records that a wallet sent USDT to Binance; it does not record whether that was a sale, collateral for a loan, or a transfer between two accounts of the same company. Nansen also cannot see agreements, deals, or anything negotiated privately. Treat it as a very good set of facts that still needs explaining.

Before paying for anything, spend a week reading a single labelled wallet after each of its moves and writing down what you think it was doing. If the labels do not change a decision you would have made anyway, the subscription is not for you yet. See also the free alternatives to Nansen and how it compares in Dune vs Nansen vs Arkham.
