Free Alternatives to Nansen: What You Can Track Without Paying

Nansen is expensive, and most of what it shows is public data with a good interface over it. The blockchain itself charges nothing. So a patient researcher can reproduce a surprising amount of it for free - the part you genuinely pay for is the labelling and the convenience, not the facts underneath.

What to use instead

  • A block explorer such as Etherscan or Solscan - free, official, and the ground truth. One wallet, one transaction, one token's holder list at a time.
  • Arkham - free to browse, and the closest thing to Nansen's naming of entities. Strong on exchanges and large funds, thinner further down.
  • Dune - community dashboards covering almost every big protocol, readable without an account.
  • DefiLlama - free, and the quickest way to see whether money is flowing into a protocol like Aave or quietly leaving it.
  • A portfolio viewer such as DeBank or Zerion - paste any address and see its holdings and positions in a readable layout.

What you give up

Three things, mostly. Ready-made labels, so you do the detective work yourself. Alerts, so you find out later rather than immediately. And breadth - checking fifty wallets by hand is a weekend, not a click. That matters if you trade fast. It matters much less if you are researching one protocol properly, where slow is fine and often better.

A free routine that actually works

Pick the handful of addresses you care about and bookmark them on a block explorer. Most explorers let you add a private note to an address, which gives you your own labels - the ones you trust, because you wrote them. Check DefiLlama for whether the protocol is growing, and a Dune dashboard for the view across all its users.

Try it on one address this week before paying for anything. Free tools plus your own notes beat an expensive dashboard you do not understand, every time. More background in what Nansen on-chain analytics is and the best on-chain analytics tools for crypto research.
