What Is Hash Rate in Crypto? How Mining Power Is Measured

Hash rate is the number of guesses per second that the machines securing a blockchain are making. Bitcoin mining is a guessing game β computers try random numbers until one produces a result that fits the network's rules, and whoever gets there first proposes the next block. Hash rate counts those attempts. A higher number means more machines competing, which means the network is harder to attack.
What do the units actually mean?
They climb fast. A terahash is a trillion guesses a second, an exahash is a million times that, and Bitcoin's whole network has been running in the region of a thousand exahashes per second through 2026. No single machine gets anywhere near this. It is the combined output of millions of specialised devices in warehouses from Texas to Kazakhstan, all guessing at once.
Why does a bigger number mean better security?
Rewriting Bitcoin's history means out-guessing every honest miner at the same time. When the network is doing a thousand exahashes a second, an attacker needs to buy and power more hardware than the entire rest of the industry owns β the cost is the defence. It is a bit like a lottery where the honest players hold so many tickets that buying a winning share becomes pointless.
What happens when hash rate rises or falls?
Blocks would arrive faster if miners simply added machines, so Bitcoin adjusts. Roughly every two weeks the network re-tunes the difficulty of the guessing game to keep new blocks about ten minutes apart. When miners switch off β after a price fall, a heatwave, or a regional power cut β hash rate drops and difficulty follows it down at the next adjustment. Ethereum has no hash rate at all any more; it swapped mining for proof of stake in 2022.
A practical note: hash-rate charts are a health check on the network, not a signal about price. Treat any service promising guaranteed returns from "renting hash power" with deep suspicion β cloud mining contracts are a long-running favourite of scammers.
