What Is Proof of Stake? How Ethereum Secures Itself Without Mining

Proof of stake is a way for a blockchain to agree on its shared record without anyone burning electricity. Instead of racing to solve puzzles, participants lock up coins of their own as a deposit. The network picks one of them to propose the next block, everyone else checks the work, and anyone who cheats loses part of the deposit. Ethereum has run this way since 2022.
How does locking up money keep the network honest?
It works like a deposit on a rented flat. You put money down before you get the keys, and if you wreck the place you do not get it back. On Ethereum a validator locks 32 ETH, takes their turn proposing and checking blocks, and earns a modest reward for doing it properly. Sign two conflicting versions of history, and the network destroys a slice of that stake automatically β a penalty known as slashing. Attacking the chain therefore means paying for the privilege of being fined.
How is this different from proof of work?
The security still comes from something expensive, but the expense is capital locked in the system rather than electricity spent outside it. When Ethereum made the switch, in an upgrade called the Merge, its energy use fell by more than 99 percent overnight and mining rigs became irrelevant to it. Most newer networks, Solana and Cardano among them, were built this way from the start. Bitcoin was not, and shows no intention of changing.
Do you need 32 ETH to take part?
No. Staking pools and exchanges let people stake much smaller amounts by combining them, and hand back a token representing the share. That convenience carries real trade-offs: you are trusting whoever runs the pool, the smart contract holding the funds, and there may be a wait to get your coins out.
A practical note: rewards on Ethereum staking are a few percent a year, so treat any platform advertising far more as a warning rather than an opportunity. Whatever you do, read how long the unlock period is before you commit anything you might need back quickly.
