What Is ERC-8004? Giving AI Agents an On-Chain Identity

ERC-8004 is a draft Ethereum standard that gives software agents - programs that go off and do jobs on their own, increasingly AI ones - a public identity and a track record that lives on the blockchain instead of inside one company's database. It does not move money and it is not a coin. It is a way to answer two questions before you hire a piece of software: who is this, and has it done good work before?

What problem is it solving?

Say an agent offers to find you the cheapest route to swap a token, for a small fee. Today its reputation sits on whichever platform lists it, and that platform owns the reviews, the ranking and the right to delete both. Move the agent elsewhere and it starts from zero. ERC-8004 puts the record somewhere neutral - the same place the payment would settle - so it travels with the agent. The everyday version is a trade licence plus a review book that no single shop controls.

How does it work?

The proposal defines three registries, kept deliberately thin:

  • Identity - each agent gets an entry built on ERC-721, the same standard behind NFTs, pointing to a file listing its name, what it can do and how to reach it.
  • Reputation - clients post a score with a link to the detail. The agent has to pre-authorise feedback, which keeps out drive-by spam, and feedback can be withdrawn.
  • Validation - independent checkers re-run a job and publish the result with evidence, for cases where a star rating is not enough.

How finished is it?

Not very, and that matters. ERC-8004 is still being argued over on the Ethereum Magicians forum, with a reference implementation to test against. The number might stick or the design might change. Deliberately left out: payments, a single formula for turning feedback into a score, and any one way of validating work - those are meant to be built on top.

The practical note is a sceptical one. A standard is not a product and there is nothing here to buy, so treat any token waving the ERC-8004 name as unrelated marketing. If you want to follow it properly, read the proposal itself. The NFT standard it borrows for identity is explained in what ERC-721 is, and how it sits beside the others in ERC-20 vs ERC-721 vs ERC-1155.
