What Is Copy Trading in Crypto? A Guide for Beginners

Copy trading in crypto means linking your exchange account to someone else's, so that when they open or close a trade, your account does the same thing automatically, scaled to the money you set aside for it. You pick a trader from a public list, choose an amount, and press copy. You are not buying a fund and not handing over your coins - they stay in your own account, and you can stop at any moment.

Who is on the other side?

The person you follow is called a lead trader. Exchanges such as Bybit, Bitget and OKX run these programmes, and so does the broker app eToro, which popularised the idea years before crypto picked it up. Lead traders publish a track record and earn a cut of the profit they make for the people copying them, commonly around 10%. That one detail explains most of their behaviour: they are paid on the upside, and the downside is yours alone.

What does it actually feel like?

Think of a group hike where everyone follows the guide step for step. If the guide takes the easy path, so do you. If the guide decides to wade across a river, you are already knee-deep before you have thought about it. Copy trading works the same way - trades land in your account within seconds, often while you are asleep, and usually on futures with leverage, which is borrowed money that multiplies the gain and the loss alike.

What a beginner should set up first

Every platform lets you cap the damage before you start. Use a small, separate amount that is not your savings. Set a maximum loss at which copying stops by itself. Check whether the trader uses leverage and how much of it. And look past the headline return: a trader showing +300% may have been down 70% along the way, and you would have had to sit through that stretch without flinching.

Read how a copied trade actually reaches your account before you fund anything, then walk through the settings in the setup guide. Copy one trader with a small amount for a month before deciding whether this suits you at all.
