How to Copy Trade Crypto: Setup, Risks and Strategy

To copy trade crypto you open an account on an exchange that offers it, move a small, separate amount into the copy-trading wallet, pick a lead trader from the public list, set your limits and press copy. From then on their trades appear in your account on their own. The setup takes a few minutes. Deciding whom to copy, and how much to risk, deserves an evening.

The setup, step by step

  • Choose a platform. Bybit, Bitget, OKX and Binance all run copy-trading desks; eToro offers the same idea alongside shares.
  • Fund a dedicated balance. Treat it as money for a hobby, not savings. Many platforms start from around $10, which is enough to watch how the thing behaves.
  • Pick one trader, not five. Five traders all long the same coins is one bet wearing a disguise.
  • Set the limits the platform gives you: a maximum loss that stops copying, a cap per trade, and a leverage ceiling where one is offered.

The risks to plan for

The main one is plain: you are copying a stranger who is paid on your profits and loses nothing when you lose. Most copy trading happens on futures with leverage, where a sharp move can liquidate a position - close it out at a loss automatically - before you have even seen the notification. Leaderboards flatter, too. They tend to show return rather than how deep the account fell to get there, and a trader can look brilliant for three months simply by holding losing positions instead of taking small losses.

A strategy that survives a bad month

Decide in advance what you will do when the balance is down 20%, because at some point it will be. Write the number down, put it into the platform's stop setting, and then leave it alone. Review weekly rather than hourly. And treat the profit share as a real cost: a 10% cut turns a gross gain of 15% into 13.5% before trading fees are counted.

Run it for a month with money you could lose before adding anything to it. Choosing who to copy goes deeper into the numbers, and the beginner's overview is worth reading first if any of this was new.
