What Is an Altseason in Crypto?

An altseason, short for altcoin season, is a stretch of weeks or months when most coins other than Bitcoin rise faster than Bitcoin does. Nobody declares it open and nobody rings a bell at the end. The word simply describes what the market looks like when money spreads out of Bitcoin into Ethereum, Solana and thousands of smaller coins at the same time.

How do people tell an altseason is happening?

By measuring the rest of the market against Bitcoin rather than against the dollar. The best known gauge is the Altcoin Season Index, which CoinMarketCap and several other sites publish. It takes the top 50 coins, looks back over the last 90 days, and counts how many of them beat Bitcoin. When about three quarters of them did, the index calls it altcoin season; when only a quarter or fewer did, it calls it Bitcoin season. The other common signal is Bitcoin dominance — Bitcoin's share of the whole market's value — drifting down while the total value of altcoins holds up.

Why would money move out of Bitcoin at all?

Think of a high street on a busy Saturday. The crowd goes to the big anchor store first, because everyone has heard of it. Once people are already out and in a spending mood, they wander into the smaller shops on the same street. Crypto tends to behave the same way: new money arrives through the biggest and most familiar door, and some of it later goes looking for something smaller. Because small coins have far less money in them, the same amount of buying moves their price much further.

What is the catch?

The same maths runs in reverse. A coin that can double on modest buying can halve on modest selling, and small coins are usually the first to be sold when the mood turns. An altseason is also not a calendar event: past cycles looked similar in hindsight, but nothing guarantees the pattern repeats, and "it is altseason" is a favourite line of people trying to sell you something.

If you hear the word being used a lot, treat it as a description of the weather, not a forecast. Check the index yourself rather than trusting a screenshot, look at how much money is actually trading in a coin before you touch it, and be aware that excitement like this is where FOMO does its most expensive work.
