What Does FOMO Mean in Crypto?

FOMO is short for "fear of missing out". In crypto it is the urge to buy something because the price is already climbing and everyone else seems to be making money. It is probably the most expensive feeling in the market, because it pushes people to buy at the exact moment a coin is loudest, priciest and least understood.

What does FOMO actually feel like?

Like joining a long queue outside a restaurant. You have not seen the menu and nobody has told you the food is good — you are there because the queue is long. In crypto the queue is a chart. A coin you had never heard of last week is up 60% in a day, the group chat is full of screenshots, and somebody posts that it is "just getting started". The decision takes about ninety seconds, and not one of those seconds is spent on what the project does. That is the tell: if you cannot say what the thing is for, you are buying the queue.

Why does it cost people money?

Because prices are loudest near the top. Bitcoin makes headlines when it is at a record, not when it is quietly flat, so a great many people first hear about crypto at its most expensive moment and buy in right before a long, boring slide. Scammers know this and manufacture the feeling deliberately: countdown timers, "last chance before launch", a chart that only goes up because the people showing it to you are the ones buying. How do you turn it off?

You cannot stop feeling it, but you can stop acting on it. The trick is to make decisions when nothing is happening. Write down in advance how much you are willing to put in and what you would buy, so that the exciting moment finds you with a plan instead of a chart. A simple twenty-four-hour rule helps too: if a coin is a good idea today, it will still be one tomorrow, and if the whole pitch collapses when you wait a day, it was never an idea, it was pressure.

One practical test before any purchase made in a hurry: could you explain this coin to a friend without mentioning the price? If not, close the app. Nothing that is genuinely worth owning requires you to buy it in the next ten minutes.
