What Is a Stop-Loss Order in Crypto?

A stop-loss order is a standing instruction to sell if the price falls to a level you choose. You set it when you buy β€” sell my ether if it drops to 2,800 dollars, say β€” and the exchange watches the market for you. If the price gets there, the order fires and you are out. If it never does, nothing happens. It exists so that one bad night cannot turn into a disaster while you are asleep.

Why not just watch the chart yourself?

Because a stop-loss takes you out of the decision. Crypto trades around the clock, and the sharpest falls tend to arrive at inconvenient hours. The order makes the choice once, calmly, before there is any pressure β€” the opposite of what almost anyone does while staring at a red screen at three in the morning. It is a smoke alarm rather than a fire brigade: it will not save the building, but it wakes you early enough to walk out.

Stop-market or stop-limit?

Two flavours, and the difference matters:

  • Stop-market. Once triggered, it sells at whatever price is available. You always get out, but in a fast fall the price you get can be well below the one you set.
  • Stop-limit. Once triggered, it places a limit order at a price you name. You control the price, but if the market drops straight past it the order never fills and you are still holding.

Where do stop-losses go wrong?

Set one too close to the current price and ordinary noise will trigger it, selling you out of a position that recovers an hour later. Set it too far away and it protects almost nothing. Thin markets make this worse: a coin with little liquidity can dip briefly on a single large sale, sweep up every stop sitting nearby, and bounce straight back.

A practical note: choose the level from something visible on the chart, such as a price the coin has bounced off before, rather than a round percentage, and decide it at the same moment you decide to buy. And keep stops for trades you are actively managing β€” if you bought something to hold for years, an automatic sell order works against you.
